2026-04-07thunderbolt: tunnel: Simplify allocationRosen Penev
Use a flexible array member and kzalloc_flex to combine allocations. Add __counted_by for extra runtime analysis. Move counting variable assignment after allocation. kzalloc_flex with GCC >= 15 does this automatically. 2026-03-09thunderbolt: Fix property read in nhi_wake_supported()Konrad Dybcio
device_property_read_foo() returns 0 on success and only then modifies 'val'. Currently, val is left uninitialized if the aforementioned function returns non-zero, making nhi_wake_supported() return true almost always (random != 0) if the property is not present in device firmware. Invert the check to make it make sense. 2026-03-02thunderbolt: Disable CLx on Titan Ridge-based devices with old firmwareRene Sapiens
Thunderbolt 3 devices based on Titan Ridge routers with NVM firmware version < 0x65 have been observed to become unstable when CL states are enabled. This can lead to link disconnect events and the device failing to enumerate. Enable CLx on Titan Ridge only when the running NVM firmware version is >= 0x65. 2026-03-02thunderbolt: Read router NVM version before applying quirksRene Sapiens
The router NVM version is currently only available after the NVMem devices have been registered. This is too late for firmware-dependent quirks that are evaluated during tb_switch_add() before device registration. Split router NVM handling into two phases: - tb_switch_nvm_init() allocates the NVM object and reads the version - tb_switch_nvm_add() registers the NVMem devices using the pre-read NVM This makes the NVM major/minor version available before tb_check_quirks() without changing when the NVMem devices are registered. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2026-01-20kernel.h: drop hex.h and update all hex.h usersRandy Dunlap
Remove <linux/hex.h> from <linux/kernel.h> and update all users/callers of hex.h interfaces to directly #include <linux/hex.h> as part of the process of putting kernel.h on a diet. Removing hex.h from kernel.h means that 36K C source files don't have to pay the price of parsing hex.h for the roughly 120 C source files that need it. This change has been build-tested with allmodconfig on most ARCHes. Also, all users/callers of <linux/hex.h> in the entire source tree have been updated if needed (if not already #included). 2026-01-05thunderbolt: Log path activation failures without WARN backtracesChia-Lin Kao (AceLan)
tb_path_activate() currently logs failures with tb_WARN(), which triggers a stack trace. Transient conditions such as lane bonding or Type-C link hiccups can fail path activation briefly, and the resulting backtraces are noisy without aiding diagnosis. Switch to tb_warn() for all path activation failures. The error code is already returned to callers, and the warning still shows the message without the backtrace. 2025-11-07thunderbolt: Replace use of system_wq with system_percpu_wqMarco Crivellari
Currently if a user enqueues a work item using schedule_delayed_work() the used wq is "system_wq" (per-cpu wq) while queue_delayed_work() use WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a cpu is not specified). The same applies to schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND. This lack of consistency cannot be addressed without refactoring the API. This patch continues the effort to refactor worqueue APIs, which has begun with the change introducing new workqueues and a new alloc_workqueue flag: commit 128ea9f6ccfb ("workqueue: Add system_percpu_wq and system_dfl_wq") commit 930c2ea566af ("workqueue: Add new WQ_PERCPU flag") Replace system_wq with system_percpu_wq, keeping the old behavior. The old wq (system_wq) will be kept for a few release cycles. 2025-09-23thunderbolt: Fix use-after-free in tb_dp_dprx_workDuoming Zhou
The original code relies on cancel_delayed_work() in tb_dp_dprx_stop(), which does not ensure that the delayed work item tunnel->dprx_work has fully completed if it was already running. This leads to use-after-free scenarios where tb_tunnel is deallocated by tb_tunnel_put(), while tunnel->dprx_work remains active and attempts to dereference tb_tunnel in tb_dp_dprx_work(). A typical race condition is illustrated below: CPU 0 | CPU 1 tb_dp_tunnel_active() | tb_deactivate_and_free_tunnel()| tb_dp_dprx_start() tb_tunnel_deactivate() | queue_delayed_work() tb_dp_activate() | tb_dp_dprx_stop() | tb_dp_dprx_work() //delayed worker cancel_delayed_work() | tb_tunnel_put(tunnel); | | tunnel = container_of(...); //UAF | tunnel-> //UAF Replacing cancel_delayed_work() with cancel_delayed_work_sync() is not feasible as it would introduce a deadlock: both tb_dp_dprx_work() and the cleanup path acquire tb->lock, and cancel_delayed_work_sync() would wait indefinitely for the work item that cannot proceed. Instead, implement proper reference counting: - If cancel_delayed_work() returns true (work is pending), we release the reference in the stop function. - If it returns false (work is executing or already completed), the reference is released in delayed work function itself. This ensures the tb_tunnel remains valid during work item execution while preventing memory leaks. This bug was found by static analysis.
