This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc() family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's "--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control flow indicator I could find. Build tested allmodconfig on x86, arm64, arm, loongarch, mips, powerpc, riscv, and s390 with no new warnings. 2026-08-14drm/virtio: use the DMA API for resource backing on XenBenjamin Leggett
On a Xen PV domain page addresses bear no relation to the real machine addresses the host would have to use to reach it. virtio_ring.c handles this correctly, vring_use_map_api() returns true for any xen_domain() regardless of VIRTIO_F_ACCESS_PLATFORM. virtio-gpu makes the same decision independently, but its copy looks only at the feature bit: bool use_dma_api = !virtio_has_dma_quirk(vgdev->vdev); QEMU does not set iommu_platform on virtio-vga by default, so VIRTIO_F_ACCESS_PLATFORM is not negotiated, use_dma_api is false, and virtio_gpu_object_shmem_init() describes the framebuffer's backing pages to the host with sg_phys(). Those are guest-physical addresses. In a PV domain they resolve, on the host side, to pages belonging to some other domain, so the host scans out unrelated memory. Move the decision into virtio_gpu_use_dma_api() and give it the xen_domain() check, like vring_use_map_api() has. This additionally enables the dma_sync_sgtable_for_device() calls in virtgpu_vq.c, which are required for correctness whenever swiotlb is in play. Reproduced with a Xen 4.21 PV dom0 nested inside QEMU 8.2 with virtio-vga, on both a distro 6.8 kernel and 6.18 LTS. A PVH dom0 works fine and doesn't need this fix because it is identity-mapped, only PV dom0s are affected. Fixes: a3b815f09bb8 ("drm/virtio: add iommu support.") 2026-08-14drm/virtio: reclaim pending vbufs before tearing down vqsAnuj Bolewar
virtio_gpu_free_vbufs() destroys the vbufs kmem_cache after the virtqueues have already been released. Commands that were queued but never completed by the device leave their vbuffers stranded in the virtqueue, so the cache still holds live objects when virtio_gpu_deinit() tears everything down. This triggers a WARNING in virtio_gpu_free_vbufs: BUG virtio-gpu-vbufs (Not tainted): Objects remaining in cache on __kmem_cache_shutdown() Drain any buffers still sitting in the control and cursor virtqueues in virtio_gpu_deinit() after the device has been reset and before the virtqueues are deleted, following the same pattern used by virtio_console's remove_vqs(). Each reclaimed buffer is released with free_vbuf(), dropping the reference on any GEM objects it holds. Pending RESOURCE_UNREF commands are handled as well: their resp_cb_data still references a GEM object, so it is cleaned up with virtio_gpu_cleanup_object() to avoid leaking it on teardown. 2026-07-13drm/virtio: fix deadlock in display_info_cb by removing hotplug from dequeue ↵Ryosuke Yasuoka
worker A probe-time deadlock can occur between the dequeue worker and drm_client_register(). During probe, drm_client_register() holds clientlist_mutex and calls the fbdev hotplug callback, which triggers an atomic commit that ends up sleeping in virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_sgs() waiting for virtqueue space. The dequeue worker that would free that space calls virtio_gpu_cmd_get_display_info_cb(), which invokes drm_kms_helper_hotplug_event() -> drm_client_dev_hotplug(), attempting to acquire the same clientlist_mutex. Since wake_up() is only called after the resp_cb loop, the probe thread is never woken and both threads deadlock. Fix this by removing the hotplug notification from virtio_gpu_cmd_get_display_info_cb(). The display data (outputs[i].info) is still updated synchronously in the callback. For the init path, drm_client_register() already fires an initial hotplug when the client is registered, which picks up the connector state updated by display_info_cb. For the runtime config_changed path, add a wait_event_timeout() in config_changed_work_func() so that display_info_cb updates the connector data before the hotplug notification is sent. Also replace drm_helper_hpd_irq_event() with drm_kms_helper_hotplug_event() since virtio-gpu never calls drm_kms_helper_poll_init() and thus drm_helper_hpd_irq_event() always returns false without doing anything. virtio_gpu_init() sends GET_DISPLAY_INFO when scanouts are present and waits for display_info_pending to clear. If the response never arrives, the wait result is ignored and probe still succeeds. Return -ETIMEDOUT on display-info timeout. Because this happens after virtio_device_ready(), reset the device and tear down modesetting before using the existing vbuf and virtqueue cleanup path. 2026-06-30drm/virtio: bound EDID block reads to the response bufferBryam Vargas
virtio_get_edid_block() validates the read offset only against the device-supplied resp->size field, never against the fixed-size resp->edid array. The EDID block index is driven by the device-supplied extension count, so a malicious virtio-gpu backend can advertise a large size together with a high block count and read far past the array into adjacent kernel memory, which is then surfaced in the parsed EDID (an out-of-bounds read / info leak). Also reject any read whose end exceeds the size of the edid array. Conforming EDID responses stay within the array and are unaffected. 2026-06-08drm/virtio: fix dma_fence refcount leak on error in virtio_gpu_dma_fence_wait()Wentao Liang
dma_fence_unwrap_for_each() internally calls dma_fence_unwrap_first() which does cursor->chain = dma_fence_get(head), taking an extra reference. On normal loop completion, dma_fence_unwrap_next() releases this via dma_fence_chain_walk() -> dma_fence_put(). When virtio_gpu_do_fence_wait() fails and the function returns early from inside the loop, the cursor->chain reference is never released. This is the only caller in the entire kernel that does an early return inside dma_fence_unwrap_for_each. Add dma_fence_put(itr.chain) before the early return. 2026-06-03drm/virtio: abort virtqueue wait on device removal to avoid hung taskRyosuke Yasuoka
virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_sgs() and virtio_gpu_queue_cursor() use wait_event() without any abort condition when waiting for virtqueue space. If the host device stops processing commands, these waits block indefinitely inside a drm_dev_enter/exit() critical section. Since drm_dev_unplug(), which is called in device removal and system shutdown call path, blocks on synchronize_srcu() until all critical sections complete, device removal and system shutdown also hang. Add a vqs_released flag to virtio_gpu_device and include it in the wait_event() condition. Set the flag and wake up both queues in a new virtio_gpu_release_vqs() helper, called before drm_dev_unplug() in both virtio_gpu_remove() and virtio_gpu_shutdown(). When the flag is set, the wait returns immediately and the command is aborted, following the same cleanup path as drm_dev_enter() failure. When the host KVM/QEMU resumes from hibernation, it loses all graphics resources previously submitted by the guest OS, as the QEMU process is terminated during the suspend-resume cycle. This leads to invalid resource errors when the guest OS attempts to interact with the host using those resources after resumption. To resolve this, the virtio-gpu driver now tracks all active virtio_gpu_objects and provides a mechanism to restore them by re-submitting the objects to QEMU when needed (e.g., during resume from hibernation). Use it from virtio_gpu_cursor_plane_update() and virtio_gpu_resource_flush(); check the return value to handle the remaining -ENOMEM case from dma_resv_reserve_fences() by freeing the objs and skipping the plane update for that frame. The framebuffer BOs touched here are not shared with other contexts and lock contention is expected to be brief, so the loss of signal-interruptibility is acceptable. If userspace never maps GEM object, then BO wastes hostmem space because VirtIO-GPU driver maps VRAM BO at the BO's creating time. Make mappings on-demand by adding new RESOURCE_CREATE_BLOB IOCTL/UAPI hinting flag telling that host mapping should be deferred until first mapping is made when the flag is set by userspace. 2026-05-04drm: Rename struct drm_atomic_state to drm_atomic_commitMaxime Ripard
The KMS framework uses two slightly different definitions for the state concept. For a given object (plane, CRTC, encoder, etc., so drm_$OBJECT_state), the state is the entire state of that object. However, at the device level, drm_atomic_state refers to a state update for a limited number of objects. Thus, drm_atomic_state isn't the entire device state, but only the full state of some objects in that device. This has been an endless source of confusion and thus bugs. We can rename the drm_atomic_state structure to drm_atomic_commit to make it less confusing. This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2025-10-09drm/virtgpu: Use vblank timerThomas Zimmermann
Use a vblank timer to simulate the vblank interrupt. The DRM vblank helpers provide an implementation on top of Linux' hrtimer. Virtgpu enables and disables the timer as part of the CRTC. The atomic_flush callback sets up the event. Like vblank interrupts, the vblank timer fires at the rate of the display refresh. Most userspace limits its page flip rate according to the DRM vblank event. Virtgpu's virtual hardware does not provide vblank interrupts, so DRM sends each event ASAP. With the fast access times of virtual display memory, the event rate is much higher than the display mode's refresh rate; creating the next page flip almost immediately. This leads to excessive CPU overhead from even small display updates, such as moving the mouse pointer. This problem affects virtgpu and all other virtual displays. 2025-07-17Revert "drm/virtio: Use dma_buf from GEM object instance"Thomas Zimmermann
This reverts commit 415cb45895f43015515473fbc40563ca5eec9a7c. The dma_buf field in struct drm_gem_object is not stable over the object instance's lifetime. The field becomes NULL when user space releases the final GEM handle on the buffer object. This resulted in a NULL-pointer deref. Workarounds in commit 5307dce878d4 ("drm/gem: Acquire references on GEM handles for framebuffers") and commit f6bfc9afc751 ("drm/framebuffer: Acquire internal references on GEM handles") only solved the problem partially. They especially don't work for buffer objects without a DRM framebuffer associated. Hence, this revert to going back to using .import_attach->dmabuf. 2025-05-12drm/virtio: Fix NULL pointer deref in virtgpu_dma_buf_free_obj()Vivek Kasireddy
There is a chance that obj->dma_buf would be NULL by the time virtgpu_dma_buf_free_obj() is called. This can happen for imported prime objects, when drm_gem_object_exported_dma_buf_free() gets called on them before drm_gem_object_free(). This is because drm_gem_object_exported_dma_buf_free() explicitly sets obj->dma_buf to NULL. Therefore, fix this issue by storing the dma_buf pointer in the virtio_gpu_object instance and using it in virtgpu_dma_buf_free_obj. This stored pointer is guaranteed to be valid until the object is freed as we took a reference on it in virtgpu_gem_prime_import().
