2025-11-25drm/fb-helper: Allocate and release fb_info in single placeThomas Zimmermann
Move the calls to drm_fb_helper_alloc_info() from drivers into a single place in fbdev helpers. Allocates struct fb_info for a new framebuffer device. Then call drm_fb_helper_single_fb_probe() to create an fbdev screen buffer. Also release the instance on errors by calling drm_fb_helper_release_info(). Simplifies the code and fixes the error cleanup for some of the drivers. Regular release of the struct fb_info instance still happens in drm_fb_helper_fini() as before. v2: - remove error rollback in driver implementations (kernel test robot) - initialize info in TTM implementation (kernel test robot) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Acked-by: Christian König <christian.koenig@amd.com> # radeon Acked-by: Dmitry Baryshkov <dmitry.baryshkov@oss.qualcomm.com> # msm Acked-by: Javier Martinez Canillas <javierm@redhat.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20251027081245.80262-1-tzimmermann@suse.de
2025-10-30drm/client: Create client buffers with drm_client_buffer_create_dumb()Thomas Zimmermann
Rename drm_client_framebuffer_create() to drm_client_buffer_create_dump() and adapt callers. The new name reflects the function's purpose. Using dumb buffers is the easiest way for creating a GEM buffer in a drivers- independent way. There's also drm_client_buffer_create(), which creates the client buffer from a preexisting buffer object. This helper can be exported for drivers that create their own GEM buffer object. 2025-10-30drm/client: Remove drm_client_framebuffer_delete()Thomas Zimmermann
Release client buffers with drm_client_buffer_delete() instead of drm_client_framebuffer_delete(). The latter is just a tiny wrapper around the former. Move the test for !buffer into drm_client_buffer_delete(), although all callers appear to always have a valid pointer. v2: - test for !buffer before deref-ing pointer (Jocelyn, Dan) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Reviewed-by: Jocelyn Falempe <jfalempe@redhat.com> Tested-by: Francesco Valla <francesco@valla.it> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20251027121042.143588-6-tzimmermann@suse.de
2025-10-24drm/client: Add client free callback to unprepare fb_helperThomas Zimmermann
Add free callback to struct drm_client_funcs. Invoke function to free the client memory as part of the release process. Implement free for fbdev emulation. Fbdev emulation allocates and prepares client memory in drm_fbdev_client_setup(). The release happens in fb_destroy from struct fb_ops. Multiple implementations of this callback exist in the various drivers that provide an fbdev implementation. Each of them needs to follow the implementation details of the fbdev setup code. Adding a free callback for the client puts the unprepare and release of the fbdev client in a single place. 2024-09-26drm/fbdev-ttm: Remove obsolete setup functionThomas Zimmermann
The old setup function drm_fbdev_ttm_setup() is unused. Remove it and its internal callbacks. New drivers should call drm_client_setup() instead. 2024-09-26drm/fbdev-ttm: Support struct drm_driver.fbdev_probeThomas Zimmermann
Rework fbdev probing to support fbdev_probe in struct drm_driver and reimplement the old fb_probe callback on top of it. Provide an initializer macro for struct drm_driver that sets the callback according to the kernel configuration. This change allows the common fbdev client to run on top of TTM- based DRM drivers. 2024-05-02drm/fbdev-generic: Convert to fbdev-ttmThomas Zimmermann
Only TTM-based drivers use fbdev-generic. Rename it to fbdev-ttm and change the symbol infix from _generic_ to _ttm_. Link the source file into TTM helpers, so that it is only build if TTM-based drivers have been selected. Select DRM_TTM_HELPER for loongson.
