2026-06-03drm/amd/display: Bound VBIOS record-chain walk loopsHarry Wentland
[Why & How] All record-chain walk loops in bios_parser.c and bios_parser2.c use for(;;) and only terminate on a 0xFF record_type sentinel or zero record_size. A malformed VBIOS image missing the terminator record causes unbounded iteration at probe time, potentially hundreds of thousands of iterations with record_size=1. In the final iterations near the BIOS image boundary, struct casts beyond the 2-byte header validated by GET_IMAGE can also read out of bounds. Cap all 14 record-chain walk loops to BIOS_MAX_NUM_RECORD (256) iterations. The atombios.h defines up to 22 distinct record types and atomfirmware.h has 13. Assuming an average of less than 10 records per type (which is reasonable since most are connector- based) 256 is a generous upper bound. 2026-06-03drm/amd/display: Reject gpio_bitshift >= 32 in bios_parser_get_gpio_pin_info()Harry Wentland
[Why & How] gpio_bitshift is a uint8_t read directly from the VBIOS GPIO pin table. If the value is >= 32, the expression "1 << gpio_bitshift" triggers undefined behaviour in C (shift count exceeds type width). On x86 the shift is silently masked to 5 bits, producing an incorrect GPIO mask that may cause wrong MMIO register bits to be toggled. Validate gpio_bitshift before use and return BP_RESULT_BADBIOSTABLE for out-of-range values. 2026-06-03drm/amd/display: Clamp VBIOS HDMI retimer register count to array sizeHarry Wentland
[Why & How] The VBIOS integrated info tables (v1_11 and v2_1) contain HdmiRegNum and Hdmi6GRegNum fields that are used as loop bounds when copying retimer I2C register settings into fixed-size arrays (dp*_ext_hdmi_reg_settings[9] and dp*_ext_hdmi_6g_reg_settings[3]). These u8 fields are not validated before use, so a malformed VBIOS can specify values up to 255, causing an out-of-bounds heap write during driver probe. Clamp each register count to the destination array size using min_t() before the copy loops, in both get_integrated_info_v11() and get_integrated_info_v2_1(). 2026-05-19drm/amd/display: Validate GPIO pin LUT table size before iteratingHarry Wentland
[Why&How] The GPIO pin table parsers in get_gpio_i2c_info() and bios_parser_get_gpio_pin_info() derive an element count from the VBIOS table_header.structuresize field, then iterate over gpio_pin[] entries. However, GET_IMAGE() only validates that the table header itself fits within the BIOS image. If the VBIOS reports a structuresize larger than the actual mapped data, the loop reads past the end of the BIOS image, causing an out-of-bounds read. Fix this by calling bios_get_image() to validate that the full claimed structuresize is accessible within the BIOS image before entering the loop in both functions. 2026-05-19drm/amd/display: Fix integer overflow in bios_get_image()Harry Wentland
[Why&How] The bounds check in bios_get_image() computes 'offset + size' using unsigned 32-bit arithmetic before comparing against bios_size. If a VBIOS image contains a near-UINT32_MAX offset the addition wraps to a small value, the comparison passes, and the function returns a wild pointer past the VBIOS mapping. Additionally, the comparison uses '<' (strict), which incorrectly rejects the valid exact-fit case where offset + size == bios_size. Fix both issues by restructuring the check to avoid the addition entirely: first reject if offset alone exceeds bios_size, then check size against the remaining space (bios_size - offset). This eliminates the overflow and correctly permits exact-fit accesses. [Why] Multiple display source files contain implicit narrowing conversions when assigning wider integer types (int, uint32_t) to narrower fields (uint8_t, uint16_t) at hardware register, protocol, and storage boundaries. These conversions are intentional but undocumented, and accompanying runtime assertions add noise without providing compile-time safety. [How] Add explicit casts at all intentional narrowing boundaries across display source files. Use narrower loop variable types where loop bounds guarantee safe range. Remove runtime assertions paired with narrowing casts, inline single-use intermediate variables, and revert block scopes and braces introduced solely to contain those assertions. get_gpio_i2c_info() computes the number of GPIO I2C assignment records present in the BIOS table and then uses bfI2C_LineMux as an array index into header->asGPIO_Info[]. The current check only rejects values strictly larger than the record count, so an index equal to count still falls through and reaches the fixed table one element past the end. Reject indices at or above the number of available records before using them as an array index. Slightly refactor and simplify DAC load detection. This prepares the code to be used for also executing DAC load detection on external DP bridge encoders. DAC load detection belongs better in the hardware sequencer code because the implementation is HW dependent and not all chips support the functionality. The code is cleaner when link detection probably doesn't call the VBIOS directly. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2026-02-19drm/amd/display: Initialize DAC in DCE link encoder using VBIOSTimur Kristóf
The VBIOS DAC1EncoderControl() function can initialize the DAC, by writing board-specific values to certain registers. Call this at link encoder hardware initialization time similarly to how the equivalent UNIPHYTransmitterControl initialization is done. This fixes DAC output on the Radeon HD 7790. Also remove the ENCODER_CONTROL_SETUP enum from the dac_encoder_control_prepare_params function which is actually not a supported operation for DAC encoders. 2025-11-26drm/amd/display: Fix logical vs bitwise bug in get_embedded_panel_info_v2_1()Dan Carpenter
The .H_SYNC_POLARITY and .V_SYNC_POLARITY variables are 1 bit bitfields of a u32. The ATOM_HSYNC_POLARITY define is 0x2 and the ATOM_VSYNC_POLARITY is 0x4. When we do a bitwise negate of 0, 2, or 4 then the last bit is always 1 so this code always sets .H_SYNC_POLARITY and .V_SYNC_POLARITY to true. This code is instead intended to check if the ATOM_HSYNC_POLARITY or ATOM_VSYNC_POLARITY flags are set and reverse the result. In other words, it's supposed to be a logical negate instead of a bitwise negate. DAC_LoadDetection can be used to determine whether something is connected to an analog connector by determining if there is an analog load. This causes visible flickering on displays, so we only resort to using this when the connected display doesn't have an EDID. For later VBIOS versions, the fractional feedback divider is calculated as the remainder of dividing the feedback divider by a factor, which is set to 1000000. For reference, see: - calculate_fb_and_fractional_fb_divider - calc_pll_max_vco_construct However, in case of old VBIOS versions that have set_pixel_clock_v3, they only have 1 byte available for the fractional feedback divider, and it's expected to be set to the remainder from dividing the feedback divider by 10. For reference see the legacy display code: - amdgpu_pll_compute - amdgpu_atombios_crtc_program_pll This commit fixes set_pixel_clock_v3 by dividing the fractional feedback divider passed to the function by 100000. When getting the number of connectors, the VBIOS reports the number of valid indices, but it doesn't say which indices are valid, and not every valid index has an actual connector. If we don't find a connector on an index, that is not an error. Considering these are not actual errors, don't litter the logs. 2025-02-27drm/amd/display/dc: Refactor remove duplicationsLuan Arcanjo
All dce command_table_helper's shares a copy-pasted collection of copy-pasted functions, which are: phy_id_to_atom, clock_source_id_to_atom_phy_clk_src_id, and engine_bp_to_atom. This patch removes the multiple copy-pasted by moving them to the command_table_helper.c and make the command_table_helper's calls the functions implemented by the command_table_helper.c instead. The changes were not tested on actual hardware. I am only able to verify that the changes keep the code compileable and do my best to to look repeatedly if I am not actually changing any code. This is the version 4 of the PATCH, fixed comments about licence in the new files and the matches From email to Signed-off-by email. [Why] We must implement an ACPI re-timer programming interface and notify ACPI driver whenever a PHY transition is about to take place. Because some trace lengths on certain platforms are very long, then a re-timer may need to be programmed whenever a PHY transition takes place. The implementation of this re-timer programming interface will notify ACPI driver that PHY transition is taking place and it will trigger the re-timer as needed. First we need to gather retimer information from ACPI interface. Then, in the PRE case, the re-timer interface needs to be called before we call transmitter ENABLE. In the POST case, it has to be called after we call transmitter DISABLE. [How] Implemented ACPI retimer programming interface. [WHY] The defines have also been updated with prefix AMD_ and atomfirmware.h has been temporarily updated with both sets of defines to allow the transition. This update is being made to standardize workaround chip_cap flags, in order to support more workaround flags in the future. [HOW] Updated EXT_DISPLAY_PATH_CAPS__DP_FIXED_VS_EN define, the flag is now an enum masked by EXT_DISPLAY_PATH_CAPS__EXT_CHIP_MASK. All checks for DP_FIXED_VS_EN are now performed by masking with EXT_CHIP_MASK and checking for an exact match rather than the previous bitwise AND check.
