get_finfo() calls stat() to get metadata about the target directory, but
never checks the return value. On failure, stat() returns -1 and leaves
path_stat unmodified, so path_stat.st_mode may contain uninitialized stack
data.
The code then checks S_ISDIR(path_stat.st_mode) against this potentially
garbage value. This can produce a misleading "Not a directory" error when
the real problem is a nonexistent or inaccessible path, or, in the worst
case, the check could pass by chance on garbage data and let the function
continue using an invalid path_stat for the rest of its logic.
Check the return value and fail with a clear error message if stat()
fails, matching the error-handling style already used for statfs() and
read_file() later in the same function.

test_mprotect() calls ftruncate() to resize the backing file before
mmap()'ing it, but never checks the return value. If ftruncate() fails,
the file may remain shorter than the requested mapping size. The
subsequent mmap() with MAP_SHARED can still succeed in this case, but the
very next line writes directly into the mapped memory (*map = 1), which
can trigger SIGBUS if the mapping extends beyond the actual file size.
Check the return value and fail cleanly with ksft_exit_fail_msg() if
ftruncate() fails, matching the error-handling style already used for the
mmap() call immediately below it.

The test writes min_unref_scans explicitly for every case, so its comments
describing 1 as the default are both unnecessary and, since the default is
now conditional, wrong. Refer to the threshold values directly.
No functional change.

Add a functional test for the min_unref_scans kmemleak module parameter.
Using samples/kmemleak's helper module it checks that min_unref_scans=1
reports an orphan on the first scan, min_unref_scans=2 reports nothing on
the first scan but does on the second, and that the parameter reads back
what was written.
It counts only the helper module's own orphans (matched by their
[kmemleak_test] backtrace, with the module kept loaded so the symbols
resolve) so unrelated leaks already present on the system do not perturb
the result. The test skips when run as non-root, without
CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK / CONFIG_SAMPLE_KMEMLEAK, on a kernel without the
parameter, or when the helper yields no detectable orphan.

read_file() returns 0 on open/read failures and never returns negative
values. Existing < 0 error checks never trigger, so read failures are
silently ignored. Check for zero return to detect read_file() failures.
Also fix misleading error message in get_finfo(). The error string
incorrectly references read_num when reading uevent files.

move_pages() is best effort and can temporarily fail when concurrent
faults race with page unmapping. A busy shared-anon workload can exhaust
the current 100 retries long before the intended 20-second runtime and
produce a false failure.
Use the full runtime as the retry window. Since the initial page location
is unknown, require it to reach both alternating NUMA targets to confirm
that cross-node migration made progress despite transient contention.

The hard dirty_pagecache variant uses MADV_HWPOISON to exercise recovery
of a dirty file-backed page. The recovery path records -EIO in the
address_space mapping, which NFS later reports when the test closes the
file. This makes the test fail after the hwpoison checks have completed.
Skip this variant when the test file is on NFS. Keep the hard clean-page
and both soft-offline variants enabled because they use folio removal,
invalidation, or migration rather than recording a delayed writeback
error.
The unsupported-filesystem path in clean_pagecache() also returns without
closing the opened test file. Close the descriptor before skipping there
and in dirty_pagecache().

The hole_punch case verifies that guard regions survive MADV_REMOVE and
that the backing range is punched out. MADV_REMOVE delegates the hole
punch to the backing filesystem, which may reject the operation with
EOPNOTSUPP.
That result means the test cannot establish the state whose guard
semantics it intends to validate. Treating the missing filesystem
capability as a guard-region failure creates a false regression.
Unmap the range and skip only when MADV_REMOVE fails with EOPNOTSUPP.
Preserve the assertion for all other errors so failures on supported
configurations remain visible.

Patch series "selftests/mm: Handle unsupported and transient test
conditions", v3.
Several MM selftests report failures when the test environment lacks
an underlying prerequisite, such as fallocate() support, MADV_REMOVE,
local page-cache semantics, or swap.
This series converts those unsupported cases to SKIP while preserving
failures for unexpected errors. It also allows migration tests to retry
transient move_pages() failures.
This patch (of 4):
The tmpfile-backed COW cases allocate a one-page file with fallocate()
before exercising private and shared mappings. When the filesystem
backing tmpfile() does not implement fallocate(), setup fails with
EOPNOTSUPP and no COW behavior is exercised.
This occurs when the temporary directory resides on a filesystem with
limited allocation support, such as NFSv3. Reporting a failure adds noise
because the test prerequisite is absent rather than the COW implementation
being broken.
Report EOPNOTSUPP as a skip. Continue treating every other fallocate()
error as a failure so unexpected setup regressions remain visible.

Currently __pagemap_scan_get_categories returns the result from the ioctl
call which should be an int, not uint64_t. The ioctl may return -1 on
error, which will be interpreted as UINT64_MAX. Adjust the return type to
use the correct value.

Added a new command 'mthp_khugepaged' for mTHP collapse, along with the
'-c' parameter to specify the collapse order. Additionally, added mTHP
collapse test cases for 'collapse_full', 'collapse_empty', and
'collapse_single_mthp' for anonymous folios. All khugepaged test cases
passed.

The current .gitignore hardcodes each generated test binary by name,
requiring updates every time a new test is added.
Switch to the pattern-matching approach similar to KVM:selftests. Ignore
everything by default and then allow source extensions (.c, .h, .sh) and
tracked non-source files.
Note that local_config.h was renamed to local_config.h_gen in a previous
patch so that un-ignoring *.h files does not cause generated build
artifacts to become untracked.

read_memory_info() invokes two shell pipelines to obtain MemFree and
Hugepagesize from /proc/meminfo. It does not check whether popen()
returns NULL before passing the result to fgets(), and it does not call
pclose() when fgets() fails.
Open /proc/meminfo directly and obtain both values in a single pass. This
removes the unchecked NULL path, closes the file on all paths, and avoids
dependencies on external commands.
The compaction test continues to pass after this change.

Patch series "selftests/mm: use pattern matching in .gitignore", v4.
The current selftests/mm/.gitignore hardcodes each generated test binary
by name, which requires manual updates every time a new test is added.
This series switches to a pattern-matching approach (similar to KVM
selftests), ignoring everything by default and allowing specific source
extensions. To accommodate this without tracking generated headers,
local_config.h is renamed to local_config.h_gen.
This patch (of 2):
Because local_config.h is a generated build artifact, un-ignoring all .h
files in .gitignore causes it to incorrectly show up as an untracked file
in git status.
Rename it to local_config.h_gen so it no longer matches the !*.h inclusion
rule, preparing for a subsequent patch that switches .gitignore to a
pattern-matching approach.
Update Makefile, check_config.sh, and affected test sources (cow.c,
gup_longterm.c) accordingly.

While maintaining anonymous page offsets for VMAs has no impact for most
merge cases, it does impact MAP_PRIVATE-mapped file-backed mappings which
happen to have matching page offset but not matching anonymous page
offset.
Assert this behaviour by attempting to map an unfaulted MAP_PRIVATE-memfd
region with a faulted one with compatible file page offsets but
incompatible anonymous page offsets.

Commit 49a4e7186b08 ("selftests/mm: thuge-gen: add setup of HugeTLB
pages") changed thuge-gen test to use common functions for reading hugetlb
attributes from sysfs, but it missed that the original read_free()
function special cased PAGE_SIZE tests.
For PAGE_SIZE tests, failure to read sysfs was ignored and read_free()
returned 0.
This allowed test_shmget() to essentially skip the check of how many huge
pages was consumed when it ran with PAGE_SIZE.
Commit 3199b0c09efa ("selftests/mm: fix read_file() return value check")
fixed checks for read_file() return value and this exposed the issue in
test_shmget() that checks the number of free hugetlb pages even for
PAGE_SIZE test, tries to access
/sys/kernel/mm/hugepages/hugepages-<PAGE_SIZE>/free_hugepages
and obviously fails there.
Gate the checks for free huge pages on size != getpagesize() and
initialize before and after variables to values matching PAGE_SIZE test.

The memory-failure tests call cleanup() only after all result checks. A
failed ASSERT_* invokes fixture teardown and aborts the test, so it skips
cleanup() and leaves the injected page hardware-poisoned.
Invoke cleanup() from FIXTURE_TEARDOWN() instead. Guard it with
self->injection_attempted so tests that exit before injection do not try
to unpoison a page when no injection was attempted. Injection can poison
a page before returning an error or delivering SIGBUS, so teardown must
clean up after every injection attempt. This runs the existing HWPoison
and HardwareCorrupted checks on both normal and assertion-failure paths.

The pagemap_ioctl selftest allocates memory via calloc() in several places
but does not check the return values. If calloc() fails, the subsequent
code will dereference a NULL pointer and crash.
Additionally, in sanity_tests(), the calloc() failure check incorrectly
uses MAP_FAILED (the mmap() error constant) instead of NULL. Since
calloc() returns NULL on failure, the check never triggers and a failed
allocation goes undetected.
Add NULL checks after each calloc() call, and fix the wrong error constant
in sanity_tests(). Use ksft_exit_fail_msg() consistent with the existing
error handling pattern in the file.

In mremap_dontunmap_partial_mapping_overwrite(), mremap() stores its
returned remapped address into remapped_mapping, while the BUG_ON
incorrectly checks dest_mapping instead.
If mremap() fails, dest_mapping still holds a valid pointer obtained from
the prior mmap() call, making this BUG_ON never trigger at all. Correct
the check to validate the actual mremap() return value stored in
remapped_mapping.

Add coverage for the PMD-hole case fixed by "fs/proc/task_mmu: fix
PAGEMAP_SCAN written state for PMD holes": a MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANON THP that
is uffd-wp'd and then dropped with MADV_DONTNEED leaves a pmd_none hole
with no page table, which PAGEMAP_SCAN must still report as written.
Factor the populate/drop/scan-both-paths sequence out of
unpopulated_scan_test() into a helper, and add unpopulated_thp_scan_test()
that reuses it with a THP.
Include <linux/mman.h> for MADV_COLLAPSE; <sys/mman.h> lacks it on older
glibc (e.g. 2.34). Same approach as commit fd5295afae91 ("selftests/mm:
hmm-tests: include linux/mman.h to access MADV_COLLAPSE").

Each HMM test open-codes the same buffer initialization sequence: allocate
main buffer, assign file descriptor and size, allocate mirror buffer, then
perform mmap mapping. Factor out this repeated logic into a standalone
hmm_buffer_alloc() helper to eliminate ~35 open-coded copies.
The new helper supports distinct mmap_size and mirror_size parameters to
fit scenarios with THP alignment padding or per-page snapshot flags. It
also exposes prot, flags and fd arguments, enabling support for
MAP_SHARED, MAP_HUGETLB and file-backed mappings.
Eliminates ~360 lines of redundant boilerplate code. Fixes a missing NULL
pointer check bug in the hmm_buffer_alloc() previously used only by the
migration benchmark, now subsumed by this new unified helper.

run_vmtests.sh runs on-fault-limit as the nobody user via "sudo -u nobody
./on-fault-limit", guarded by a check that nobody can access the binary
("sudo -u nobody ls ./on-fault-limit").
The guard resolves the relative path from the inherited working directory,
which only requires search permission on the test directory itself.
Classic sudo passes the relative path through to execve() the same way, so
the two agree. However, sudo-rs (the default sudo implementation since
Ubuntu 25.10) canonicalizes the command to an absolute path before
executing it, which requires search permission on every ancestor
directory. When the kernel tree lives under a private home directory
(mode 0750, the Ubuntu default for new users since 21.04), the guard
passes but the execution fails with "command not found", and the test is
reported as a false FAIL:
# running sudo -u nobody ./on-fault-limit
sudo: './on-fault-limit': command not found
# [FAIL]
Wrap the command in "sh -c" so that sudo only resolves the shell binary,
and the relative path is resolved by nobody's shell from the inherited
working directory, matching what the guard checks. This is the only "sudo
-u nobody" invocation in the script; uid, cwd, rlimits (including
RLIMIT_MEMLOCK, which this test exercises) and the exit status are
unchanged through sh.
Verified on Ubuntu 26.04 (sudo-rs 0.2.13): the test now runs and passes
instead of failing. Verified on Ubuntu 24.04 (sudo 1.9.15p5): behavior is
unchanged.

The hugetlb vmemmap selftest was added to check the old HVO layout where
tail vmemmap pages reused the head page. That assumption no longer
matches the current HVO mapping layout.
HVO now keeps a private backing page for the head vmemmap page and remaps
redundant tail vmemmap pages to a shared read-only backing page. The old
page flag check is therefore testing an obsolete implementation detail
rather than the current ABI or behavior.
Remove the stale test and its build and run entries.

Add test_hmm coverage for the HMM lock-dropping fault path. The test
module gets a new HMM_DMIRROR_READ_UNLOCKED ioctl that calls
hmm_range_fault_unlocked_timeout() with a timeout of 0, exercising the
unbounded retry mode while allowing the mmap lock to be dropped during
fault handling.
Add a userfaultfd_read selftest that registers an anonymous mapping with
UFFDIO_REGISTER_MODE_MISSING, services the faults from a handler thread
with UFFDIO_COPY, and verifies that HMM can read back the data supplied by
the handler. This exercises the path where handle_mm_fault() drops
mmap_lock and hmm_range_fault_unlocked_timeout() restarts the walk
internally.

The KSM selftest uses conditional expressions to skip accesses to
merge_across_nodes on systems without NUMA support. However, the ternary
operator is combined with logical OR without parentheses:
a || numa_available() ? 0 : b || c
Due to operator precedence rules, this is parsed as:
(a || numa_available()) ? 0 : (b || c)
instead of the intended:
a || (numa_available() ? 0 : b) || c
Add parentheses around the conditional expressions to ensure the
correct evaluation order.

The KSM NUMA merge test allocates identical pages on different NUMA nodes
and verifies KSM behavior with merge_across_nodes enabled and disabled.
On systems with memoryless NUMA nodes, for example:

the test may attempt to allocate memory on a node without memory, causing
numa_alloc_onnode() to fail and resulting in a spurious test failure.
The test currently checks numa_num_configured_nodes() to determine whether
sufficient NUMA nodes are available. However, configured nodes do not
necessarily have memory.
Reuse the existing get_first_mem_node() and get_next_mem_node() helpers to
locate NUMA nodes that actually contain memory, and skip the test when
fewer than two such nodes are available.

Patch series "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM
tests", v3.
This series fixes issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories
that can report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not
satisfied.
Patch 1 updates the hugetlb selftest helpers to handle -EINVAL when
attempting to configure gigantic HugeTLB pages via nr_hugepages. PowerPC
hash MMU pSeries systems expose gigantic hugepage sizes but do not allow
runtime allocation of such pages, causing the sysfs write to fail. Handle
this case gracefully and continue running the test instead of aborting.
Patch 2 fixes the KSM NUMA merge test on systems with memoryless NUMA
nodes. The test currently relies on the number of configured NUMA nodes
and may attempt allocations on nodes that have no memory, resulting in
spurious failures. Use the existing helpers to identify NUMA nodes that
contain memory and skip the test when fewer than two such nodes are
available.
Patch 3 fixes a pre-existing operator precedence issue in ksm_tests, where
a ternary expression combined with logical OR operators could be evaluated
differently than intended. Added parentheses to ensure the correct
evaluation order.
These changes improve handling of unsupported test configurations and
unmet test prerequisites, avoiding spurious failures.
This patch (of 3):
Some MM selftests attempt to configure the amount of HugeTLB pages of
different sizes by writing to nr_hugepages.
PowerPC hash MMU pSeries systems advertise gigantic hugepage sizes but do
not support runtime allocation of such pages, writes to the corresponding
nr_hugepages file fail with -EINVAL. This causes the test to bail out
even though the failure is due to a platform limitation rather than the
functionality being tested.
Ignore -EINVAL when configuring nr_hugepages so that tests continue to run
on systems where gigantic hugepage allocation is unsupported.

The existing tools/testing/selftests/mm/rmap.c has already one testcase
for ksm_rmap_walk in TEST_F(migrate, ksm), which takes use of migration of
page from one NUMA node to another NUMA node. However, it just lacks the
scenario of mremapped VMAs.
We add the calling of mremap() and then trigger KSM to merge pages before
migrating, which is specifically to test an optimization which is
introduced by this patch ("ksm: Optimize rmap_walk_ksm by passing a
suitable address pgoff").
This test can reproduce the issue that Hugh points out at

Non-cooperarive uffd events are inherently racy and can happen in parallel
with other userfaultfd operations.
During event tests in uffd-unit-tests, the uffd monitor calls
UFFDIO_UNREGISTER upon receiving UFFD_EVENT_REMOVE.
In parallel, the faulting_process() verifies that the removed memory is
actually zeroed.
If a verification read wins the race with UFFDIO_UNREGISTER, it causes a
missing fault that uffd monitor would receive after UFFDIO_UNREGISTER is
complete. The monitor resolves the fault using UFFDIO_COPY that fails
with -ENOENT which means that VMA has been changed (see commit
27d02568f529 ("userfaultfd: mcopy_atomic: return -ENOENT when no
compatible VMA found")).
Treat -ENOENT returned by UFFDIO_COPY as non-fatal, the same way -EEXIST
is treated for concurrent faults, and don't fail the test.

Passing a stack-local child_pid to clone() with CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID is
unsafe: the kernel clears that address when the child exits, which may
happen after the test function has returned and the stack slot has been
reused.
Neither testcase uses the settid/cleartid pointers for synchronization.
Drop CLONE_PARENT_SETTID and CLONE_CHILD_CLEARTID and pass NULL for the
clone tid arguments. Wait for the clone child to exit via tkill in
test_sigsegv_handler_with_different_pkey_for_stack(), matching
test_pkru_sigreturn(), so the detached thread cannot overlap with the next
testcase.

old path only printed an error and continued; the test now exits via

Add per-test tracing to the pkey signal-handler selftest and use
pkey_assert() for error handling. Each test enables tracing at start and
disables it at end; on failure, pkey_assert() calls abort_hooks() to turn
tracing off so ftrace is not left enabled.

This is another occurrence of using getline where the code assumes that
getline allocates memory to store the line, but the pointer passed to it
is uninitialized and potentially a non-null pointer. This violates the
Open Group Spec[1] and caused a segfault in a similar situation in
selftest/clone3/clone3_set_tid. Fix it by initializing the line pointer
to NULL.
The issue has been found by simply grepping through the selftest code
after running into the issue in clone3_set_tid. Whether it segfaults in
its current state is unknown to me. But it's good to be addressed due to
defensive reasons.

PAGEMAP_SCAN reports an unpopulated pte differently depending on which
path serves the request. The PAGE_IS_WRITTEN fast path in
pagemap_scan_pmd_entry() reports a pte_none as written (and, under
PM_SCAN_WP_MATCHING, arms a marker); pagemap_page_category() returns 0 for
the same pte_none. A request that cannot take the fast path (an extra
category bit, category_anyof_mask or category_inverted) therefore reports
the pte as clean and skips arming it.
A range that was populated and then MADV_DONTNEED'd reads as written via
one mask and clean via another, and in the latter case is not re-armed for
the next round -- an incremental-dump consumer (e.g. CRIU) using a richer
mask drops the zapped range and stops tracking writes to it.
Report pte_none as written in pagemap_page_category() too. A pte_none
carries no uffd-wp marker, i.e. it is not write-protected -- the same
condition under which the present and swap cases already report
PAGE_IS_WRITTEN. The fast path applies no VMA test, so neither does this.
The hugetlb and fully-unpopulated-PMD (no page table) scans have no
PAGE_IS_WRITTEN fast path, so they do not exhibit the per-entry divergence
and are left unchanged.
Add a pagemap_ioctl selftest that populates a range, drops it with
MADV_DONTNEED, and checks that the fast path and the generic
(category_anyof_mask) path both report every page written.

There are several places in transact_test() where we use the hardcoded
0x1000 (4k) as page size, which is not always correct for architectures
supporting multiple page sizes.
Switch to use the correct page size. Otherwise ./ksft_pagemap.sh on a
16k-page-size arm64 box fails with

ksft_process_madv.sh currently runs run_vmtests.sh with the mmap category.
Update it to run the process_madv category, since ksft_mmap.sh already
runs the mmap category tests.
This avoids running mmap tests twice and ensures that process_madv tests
are run through the kselftest harness.
