vmci_transport_recv_stream_cb() looks up sockets first by the full source
and destination tuple, then by destination only in the bound table. The
fallback can select a non-listening socket without checking whether the
packet came from its stored peer.
This was reproduced with two VMCI contexts. A RST from the context not
stored in a TCP_SYN_SENT socket reset that socket after it was selected by
the destination-only lookup.
VMCI can process notification packets in bottom-half context when the
socket is not owned by user context, or defer packets to a workqueue. Use
vsock_check_source() after taking the socket lock in the bottom-half path,
and recheck after lock_sock() in the workqueue path. Listening sockets
continue to accept packets from any source.
Reply with a RST addressed from the received packet before dropping a
source that fails validation. This preserves the existing reset behavior
for bound non-listening and concurrently closed sockets without directing
the reset to a connected socket's stored peer.

virtio_transport_recv_pkt() looks up sockets first by the full source and
destination tuple, then by destination only in the bound table. The
fallback is needed for listening and connecting sockets, but sockets remain
in the bound table after connect(), so it can also return a non-listening
socket.
The fallback does not validate the source address. In TCP_SYN_SENT, a
RESPONSE from an unrelated source can transition the victim socket to
TCP_ESTABLISHED while its stored remote address remains unchanged.
Subsequent RW packets from that source are delivered through the same
destination-only fallback.
This was reproduced with capability-empty processes under different UIDs.
The attacker discovered the target tuple through unprivileged AF_VSOCK
sock_diag and caused the victim socket to read 16 attacker-chosen bytes;
the intended peer-side socket read 0 of those 16 bytes.
Add vsock_check_source() to validate the transport, source port and source
CID against the peer stored in a non-listening socket. The local transport
is the CID exception because its packets are generated internally with
VMADDR_CID_LOCAL as their source, including connections using CID aliases.
Use the helper after lock_sock() in the virtio receive path.

virtio_vsock_remove() stops the virtqueues and then flushes each work
item before freeing the enclosing virtio_vsock. The current order does
not account for dependencies between those items: tx_work may queue
send_pkt_work, and send_pkt_work may queue rx_work.
In particular, send_pkt_work can set restart_rx and release tx_lock.
The remove path can then stop the queues and flush rx_work before
send_pkt_work queues it. Although the later send_pkt_work flush waits
for that producer to finish, nothing waits for the newly queued rx_work,
so kfree(vsock) can race with it.

When transmission fails in virtio_transport_send_pkt_info, the msg_iter
might have been partially advanced. If we don't restore it, the next
attempt to send data will use an incorrect iterator state, leading to
desync and warnings like "send_pkt() returns 0, but X expected".
Specifically, this can happen in the following scenario, triggered by
the syzkaller repro:
1. A write-only VMA (PROT_WRITE only) is partially populated by a
prior TUN write that failed with -EIO but still faulted in some
pages).
2. A vsock sendmmsg call with MSG_ZEROCOPY requests transmission of a
buffer from this VMA.
3. The first packet (64KB) is sent successfully because the pages are
populated.
4. The second packet allocation fails because GUP fast pins the first page
but GUP slow fails on the next unpopulated page due to PROT_WRITE-only
permissions.
5. The iterator is advanced by the partially successful GUP (68KB total
advanced: 64KB from first packet + 4KB from second), but the send loop
breaks and only reports 64KB sent. This creates a 4KB desync.
6. The next retry starts with a non-zero iov_offset, disabling zerocopy
and falling back to copy mode.
7. In copy mode, the transmission succeeds for the next packets but
exhausts the iterator early because of the desync.
8. The final retry sees an empty iterator but zerocopy is re-enabled
(offset resets). It attempts to send the remaining bytes with zerocopy
but pins 0 pages, creating an empty packet.
9. The transport sends the empty packet, triggering the warning because
the returned bytes (header only) do not match the expected payload size.
10. The loop continues to spin, allocating ubuf_info each time, eventually
exhausting sysctl_optmem_max and returning -ENOMEM to userspace.
Restore msg_iter to its original state before the packet allocation
and transmission attempt if they fail.

vsock_connect() returns sk_err to userspace but does not clear it:
if (sk->sk_err) {
err = -sk->sk_err;
For a blocking connect() the error has already been delivered as
connect()'s return value, so leaving it set causes subsequent operations
like poll()/epoll() to keep reporting POLLERR even though the connect
failure was already delivered.
The error should be consumed once it has been returned to userspace.
Switch to sock_error(), which reads and clears sk_err atomically,
matching the behavior of other protocol implementations such as
__inet_stream_connect().

After previous patch, the branch marking a socket rejected in
vsock_accept() is unreachable, and nothing ever sets vsk->rejected
elsewhere.
In fact, since commit d021c344051a ("VSOCK: Introduce VM Sockets"),
where `rejected` was introduced, there has never been a path that sets
sk_err on a listening socket, so that branch has been dead code since
the beginning.
Therefore, we can remove the `rejected` field from vsock_sock structure.

Syzbot reported an issue which can be reproduced with these steps:
r0 = socket(AF_VSOCK, SOCK_STREAM, 0)
bind(r0, {VMADDR_CID_ANY, PORT})
connect(r0, {VMADDR_CID_LOCAL, PORT}) -> -1, EPROTO (self-connect)
listen(r0, backlog) -> 0
r1 = socket(AF_VSOCK, SOCK_STREAM, 0)
connect(r1, {VMADDR_CID_LOCAL, PORT}) -> 0
accept(r0) -> -1, EPROTO (stale sk_err)
Basically, it creates a socket (r0) and triggers a self-connect after
binding it. This self-connect fails with EPROTO because it loops back
to r0 while the socket is still in the TCP_SYN_SENT state, causing it
to be incorrectly dispatched to the connecting-client path. The
unexpected packet type encountered there sets sk_err to EPROTO.
After that, it invokes a listen() call on the same socket. This
listen() call succeeds because the kernel's listening path never
inspects or clears sk_err. Then, a new socket (r1) is created as a
normal client and connects to r0. However, vsock_accept() rejects this
incoming connection because the listener's sk_err still holds the
EPROTO error from the earlier failed self-connect.
This rejection causes the child socket created for r1's connection to
never be freed on virtio or hyperv transports; only the VMCI transport
implements pending_work to revisit and clean up a rejected socket.
For a non-blocking connect(), vsock_connect() may return -EINPROGRESS
immediately, and vsock_connect_timeout() can later set sk->sk_err
asynchronously.
Since no vsock transport ever sets sk_err on a socket while it is in
TCP_LISTEN state, checking it in vsock_accept() serves no purpose and
only carries forward errors left behind by earlier, unrelated
connection attempts on the same socket. Remove the checks so accept()
no longer rejects valid incoming connections because of a stale
error, which also avoids the resource leak described above.

Commit bd50c5dc182b ("vsock/virtio: add support for device
suspend/resume") made the *_run flags transition from false to true when
restore installs replacement virtqueues. The RX, TX and event workers
read their virtqueue before locking and checking the corresponding flag,
so a worker delayed across freeze and restore can observe the replacement
queue's running state while retaining a pointer to the deleted queue.
Read each virtqueue under its mutex after checking the run flag, keeping
the pointer and state in the same queue generation.

When many small packets accumulate in the receive queue, the skb overhead
can exceed buf_alloc even while the payload is within bounds. This causes
virtio_transport_inc_rx_pkt() to reject packets, leading to connection
resets during large transfers under backpressure.
The issue was reported by Brien, who has a reproducer, but it is also
easily reproducible with iperf-vsock [1] using a small packet size:
iperf3 --vsock -c $CID -l 129
which fails immediately without this patch but with commit 059b7dbd20a6
("vsock/virtio: fix potential unbounded skb queue").
Inspired by TCP's tcp_collapse() which solves a similar problem, add
virtio_transport_collapse_rx_queue() that walks the receive queue and
re-copies data into compact linear skbs to reduce the overhead.
The collapse is triggered proactively from when the number of skb queued
is close to exceeding the overhead budget.
A pre-scan counts the eligible bytes to size each allocation precisely,
avoiding waste for isolated small packets. Partially consumed skbs are
kept as-is to preserve buf_used/fwd_cnt accounting, EOM-marked skbs to
maintain SEQPACKET message boundaries, and skbs already larger than the
collapse target because they already have a good data-to-overhead ratio.
Walking a large queue may take a significant amount of time and cache
misses, causing traffic burstiness. To limit this, the collapse stops
once enough room is freed for this packet and the next one, but may
opportunistically free more to fill each collapsed skb to capacity.

the sock_put/sock_hold dance and the sk_acceptq_removed()/

When vmci_transport_recv_connecting_server() returns an error,
vmci_transport_recv_listen() calls vsock_remove_pending() but never
calls sk_acceptq_removed(). This leaves sk_ack_backlog incremented
permanently.
Repeated handshake failures (malformed packets, queue pair alloc
failure, event subscribe failure) cause sk_ack_backlog to climb
toward sk_max_ack_backlog. Once it reaches the limit the listener
permanently refuses all new connections with -ECONNREFUSED, a
silent denial of service requiring a process restart to recover.
The two existing sk_acceptq_removed() calls in af_vsock.c do not
cover this path: line 764 checks vsock_is_pending() which returns
false after vsock_remove_pending(), and line 1889 is only reached
on successful accept().
Fix by balancing sk_acceptq_added() with sk_acceptq_removed() on
the error path.

virtio_transport_send_pkt_info() allocates or reuses the zerocopy uarg
before entering the send loop, but virtio_transport_alloc_skb() still
fills the skb before it inherits that uarg. When fixed-buffer vectored
zerocopy hits MAX_SKB_FRAGS, io_sg_from_iter() may partially attach
managed frags and return -EMSGSIZE. The rollback path call kfree_skb()
to free an skb that carries SKBFL_MANAGED_FRAG_REFS but no uarg, so
skb_release_data() falls through to ordinary frag unref.
Pass the uarg into virtio_transport_alloc_skb() and bind it immediately
before virtio_transport_fill_skb(). This keeps control or no-payload skbs
untouched while ensuring success and rollback share one lifetime rule.

This reverts commit 4157501b9a8f ("vsock/virtio: fix skb overhead
overflow on 32-bit builds"). The fix was semantically correct (although
it would have been better to use mul_u32_u32(), as David pointed out),
but in practice we are estimating the memory used to allocate the SKBs,
and this will never cause a 32-bit variable to overflow on a 32-bit
system, since the memory would have run out long before that. On 64-bit,
SKB_TRUESIZE() already evaluates to size_t, so the multiplication is
already in 64-bit arithmetic without the cast.
Let's revert this to avoid unnecessary 64-bit multiplies on the
per-packet receive path on 32-bit systems.

On 32-bit architectures, both skb_queue_len() and SKB_TRUESIZE(0) evaluate
to 32-bit values. The multiplication can overflow before being assigned to
the u64 skb_overhead variable, making the skb overhead check ineffective.
Cast skb_queue_len() to u64 so the multiplication is always performed in

vsock_poll() reads vsk->peer_shutdown before taking the socket lock
to set EPOLLHUP and EPOLLRDHUP, then reads it again after taking
the lock to report EOF readability. A shutdown packet can update
peer_shutdown while poll is waiting for the lock, so one poll invocation
can report EOF readability without the corresponding HUP/RDHUP bits.
For connectible sockets, take one peer_shutdown snapshot after
lock_sock() and use it for all peer-shutdown-derived poll bits. For
datagram sockets, which do not take lock_sock() in poll(), take one
lockless READ_ONCE() snapshot and pair it with WRITE_ONCE() on the
writer side.
This keeps the peer-shutdown-derived bits internally consistent for each
poll pass.

After commit 059b7dbd20a6 ("vsock/virtio: fix potential unbounded skb
queue"), virtio_transport_inc_rx_pkt() subtracts per-skb overhead from
buf_alloc when checking whether a new packet fits. This reduces the
effective receive buffer below what the user configured via
SO_VM_SOCKETS_BUFFER_SIZE, causing legitimate data packets to be
silently dropped and applications that rely on the full buffer size
to deadlock.
Also, the reduced space is not communicated to the remote peer, so
its credit calculation accounts more credit than the receiver will
actually accept, causing data loss (there is no retransmission).
With this approach we currently have failures in
tools/testing/vsock/vsock_test.c. Test 18 sometimes fails, while
test 22 always fails in this way:
18 - SOCK_STREAM MSG_ZEROCOPY...hash mismatch
22 - SOCK_STREAM virtio credit update + SO_RCVLOWAT...send failed:
Resource temporarily unavailable
Fix by allowing at most `buf_alloc * 2` as the total budget for payload
plus skb overhead in virtio_transport_inc_rx_pkt(), similar to how
SO_RCVBUF is doubled to reserve space for sk_buff metadata.
This preserves the full buf_alloc for payload under normal operation,
while still bounding the skb queue growth.
With this patch, all tests in tools/testing/vsock/vsock_test.c are
now passing again.

When there is no more space to queue an incoming packet, the packet is
silently dropped. This causes data loss without any notification to
either peer, since there is no retransmission.
Under normal circumstances, this should never happen. However, it could
happen if the other peer doesn't respect the credit, or if the skb
overhead, which we recently began to take into account with commit
059b7dbd20a6 ("vsock/virtio: fix potential unbounded skb queue"),
is too high.
Fix this by resetting the connection and setting the local socket error
to ENOBUFS when virtio_transport_recv_enqueue() can no longer queue a
packet, so both peers are explicitly notified of the failure rather than
silently losing data.

vmci_transport_recv_connecting_server() returned err = 0 for a peer
RST in its default switch arm:
err = pkt->type == VMCI_TRANSPORT_PACKET_TYPE_RST ? 0 : -EINVAL;
That made vmci_transport_recv_listen() skip vsock_remove_pending(),
leaving the pending socket on the listener's pending_links with
sk_state = TCP_CLOSE while destroy: still dropped the explicit
reference taken before schedule_delayed_work().
One second later vsock_pending_work() observed is_pending=true and
performed full cleanup: vsock_remove_pending() then the two trailing
sock_put(sk) calls -- the first reached refcount 0 and __sk_freed
the socket, and the second wrote into the freed object:
BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in refcount_warn_saturate
Write of size 4 at addr ffff88800b1cac80 by task kworker
Workqueue: events vsock_pending_work
Treat peer RST like any other unexpected packet type (err = -EINVAL).
All destroy: arms now return err < 0, so vmci_transport_recv_listen()
removes pending from pending_links synchronously and
vsock_pending_work() takes the is_pending=false / !rejected branch,
dropping only its own work reference. This also closes the
multi-packet race Sashiko reported on v2: pending is removed from
the list before any subsequent packet can find it.
The pre-existing sk_acceptq_removed() gap on the err < 0 path of
vmci_transport_recv_listen() that Sashiko also noted is not
introduced or changed by this patch.

When a large message is fragmented into multiple skbs, the zerocopy
uarg is only allocated and attached to the last skb in the loop.
Non-final skbs carry pinned user pages with no completion tracking,
so the kernel has no way to notify userspace when those pages are safe
to reuse. If the loop breaks early the uarg is never allocated at all,
leaking pinned pages with no completion notification.
Fix this by following the approach used by TCP: allocate the zerocopy
uarg (if not provided by the caller) before the send loop and attach
it to every skb via skb_zcopy_set(), which takes a reference per skb.
Each skb's completion properly decrements the refcount, and the
notification only fires after the last skb is freed.
On failure, if no data was sent, the uarg is cleanly aborted via
net_zcopy_put_abort().
This issue was initially discovered by sashiko while reviewing commit
1cb36e252211 ("vsock/virtio: fix MSG_ZEROCOPY pinned-pages accounting")
but was pre-existing.

For non-linear skbs, virtio_transport_build_skb() goes through
virtio_transport_copy_nonlinear_skb() to copy the original payload
in the new skb to be delivered to the vsockmon tap device.
This manually initializes an iov_iter but does not set iov_iter.count.
Since the iov_iter is zero-initialized, the copy length is zero and no
payload is actually copied to the monitor interface, leaving data
un-initialized.
Fix this by removing the linear vs non-linear split and using
skb_copy_datagram_iter() with iov_iter_kvec() for all cases, as
vhost-vsock already does. This handles both linear and non-linear skbs,
properly initializes the iov_iter, and removes the now unused
virtio_transport_copy_nonlinear_skb().
While touching this code, let's also check the return value of
skb_copy_datagram_iter(), even though it's unlikely to fail.

virtio_transport_build_skb() builds a new skb to be delivered to the
vsockmon tap device. To build the new skb, it uses the original skb
data length as payload length, but as the comment notes, the original
packet stored in the skb may have been split in multiple packets, so we
need to use the length in the header, which is correctly updated before
the packet is delivered to the tap, and the offset for the data.
This was also similar to what we did before commit 71dc9ec9ac7d
("virtio/vsock: replace virtio_vsock_pkt with sk_buff") where we probably
missed something during the skb conversion.
Also update the comment above, which was left stale by the skb

VMBUS ring buffers must be page aligned. Therefore, the current value of
24K presents a challenge on ARM64 kernels (with 64K pages). So, use
VMBUS_RING_SIZE() to ensure they are always aligned and large enough to
hold all of the relevant data.

Commit f63152958994 fixes a regression, however it fails to report an
error for malformed/short packets -- normally we should never see such
packets, but let's report an error for them just in case.

virtio_transport_init_zcopy_skb() uses iter->count as the size argument
for msg_zerocopy_realloc(), which in turn passes it to
mm_account_pinned_pages() for RLIMIT_MEMLOCK accounting. However, this
function is called after virtio_transport_fill_skb() has already consumed
the iterator via __zerocopy_sg_from_iter(), so on the last skb, iter->count
will be 0, skipping the RLIMIT_MEMLOCK enforcement.
Pass pkt_len (the total bytes being sent) as an explicit parameter to
virtio_transport_init_zcopy_skb() instead of reading the already-consumed
iter->count.
This matches TCP and UDP, which both call msg_zerocopy_realloc() with
the original message size.

Commit f0c5827d07cb unluckily causes a regression for the FIN packet,
and the final read syscall gets an error rather than 0.
Ideally, we would want to fix hvs_channel_readable_payload() so that it
could return 0 in the FIN scenario, but it's not good for the hv_sock
driver to use the VMBus ringbuffer's cached priv_read_index, which is
internal data in the VMBus driver.
Fix the regression in hv_sock by returning 0 rather than -EIO.

`virtio_transport_stream_do_peek()` does not account for the skb offset
when computing the number of bytes to copy.
This means that, after a partial recv() that advances the offset, a peek
requesting more bytes than are available in the sk_buff causes
`skb_copy_datagram_iter()` to go past the valid payload, resulting in
a -EFAULT.
The dequeue path already handles this correctly.
Apply the same logic to the peek path.

virtio_transport_recv_listen() calls sk_acceptq_added() before
vsock_assign_transport(). If vsock_assign_transport() fails or
selects a different transport, the error path returns without
calling sk_acceptq_removed(), permanently incrementing
sk_ack_backlog.
After approximately backlog+1 such failures, sk_acceptq_is_full()
returns true, causing the listener to reject all new connections.
Fix by moving sk_acceptq_added() to after the transport validation,
matching the pattern used by vmci_transport and hyperv_transport.
