4 daysbonding: do not clear curr_active_slave prematurely when releasing all slavesEric Dumazet
When releasing all slaves during bond destruction (all == true), __bond_release_one() unconditionally clears bond->curr_active_slave to NULL in every iteration. If a backup slave is released before the active slave, bond_alb_deinit_slave() triggers rlb_teach_disabled_mac_on_primary(), which increments the active slave dev promiscuity counter and sets bond_info->primary_is_promisc = 1. Because bond->curr_active_slave was prematurely cleared to NULL when releasing the backup slave, the subsequent iteration releasing the active slave evaluates oldcurrent as NULL, so bond_change_active_slave(bond, NULL) is skipped. Consequently, bond_alb_handle_active_change() is never called to decrement the promiscuity counter, permanently leaking promiscuous mode on the physical device after bond teardown. When oldcurrent == slave, bond_change_active_slave(bond, NULL) already sets bond->curr_active_slave to NULL. We only need to avoid selecting a new active slave when all == true. Replace the if (all) branch with if (!all && oldcurrent == slave). 5 daysbonding: alb: fix uninitialized transport header access in alb_determine_nd()Eric Dumazet
alb_determine_nd() uses icmp6_hdr(skb) to inspect ICMPv6 headers. However, in xmit paths (e.g. packets sent via AF_PACKET / raw sockets or forwarded packets), skb->transport_header is not guaranteed to be initialized. While pskb_network_may_pull() ensures the packet data is linear starting from the network header, it does not set or adjust the transport header offset. Dereferencing icmp6_hdr(skb) can therefore access out-of-bounds memory. Fetch the icmp6hdr directly after ipv6hdr following pskb_network_may_pull(), and reload ipv6hdr in case pskb_may_pull() reallocated skb->head. Also remove the unused bond argument from alb_determine_nd(). 2026-08-18bonding: initialize err for empty target listsRuoyu Wang
Empty NLA_NESTED attributes are valid, and bonding uses them to clear the ARP and NS target lists. When either target attribute is empty, nla_for_each_nested() does not execute, so err retains an uninitialized value before it is tested. The request can consequently return an unpredictable error after clearing the targets. Initialize err to zero so an empty target list completes successfully. Non-empty lists still propagate errors from __bond_opt_set() unchanged. This issue was found by a static analysis checker and confirmed by manual source review. 2026-07-30bonding: alb: re-check primary_is_promisc under RTNL in bond_alb_monitorXiang Mei (Microsoft)
bond_alb_monitor() reads primary_is_promisc under RCU, then drops RCU and takes RTNL via rtnl_trylock() before undoing the promiscuity it set on the active slave. In that window the active slave can change under RTNL (RTM_DELLINK -> __bond_release_one() -> bond_alb_handle_active_change()), which already drops the promiscuity and clears primary_is_promisc. The monitor still acts on the stale decision: if the slave was removed with no failover, curr_active_slave is now NULL and the deref faults; if it failed over, the stale dev_set_promiscuity(-1) underflows the new slave's promiscuity counter and pins it in IFF_PROMISC. 2026-06-10bonding: 3ad: fix mux port state on oper downLouis Scalbert
When the bonding interface has carrier down due to the absence of usable slaves and a slave transitions from down to up, the bonding interface briefly goes carrier up, then down again, and finally up once LACP negotiates collecting and distributing on the port. When lacp_strict mode is on, the interface should not transition to carrier up until LACP negotiation is complete. This happens because the actor and partner port states remain in Collecting_Distributing when the port goes down. When the port comes back up, it temporarily remains in this state until LACP renegotiation occurs. Previously this was mostly cosmetic, but since the bonding carrier state may depend on the LACP negotiation state, it causes the interface to flap. According to IEEE 802.3ad-2000 and IEEE 802.1ax-2014, Collecting and Distributing should be reset when a port goes down: - In the Receive state machine, port_enabled == FALSE causes a transition to the PORT_DISABLED state, which is expected to clear Partner_Oper_Port_State.Synchronization. - In the Mux state machine, Partner_Oper_Port_State.Synchronization == FALSE causes a transition to the ATTACHED state, which disables Collecting and Distributing. However, Partner_Oper_Port_State.Synchronization is not cleared in the PORT_DISABLED state. Clear Partner_Oper_Port_State.Synchronization in the Receive PORT_DISABLED state. 2026-06-10bonding: 3ad: add lacp_strict configuration knobLouis Scalbert
When an 802.3ad (LACP) bonding interface has no slaves in the collecting/distributing state, the bonding master still reports carrier as up as long as at least 'min_links' slaves have carrier. In this situation, only one slave is effectively used for TX/RX, while traffic received on other slaves is dropped. Upper-layer daemons therefore consider the interface operational, even though traffic may be blackholed if the lack of LACP negotiation means the partner is not ready to deal with traffic. Introduce a configuration knob to control this behavior. It allows the bonding master to assert carrier only when at least 'min_links' slaves are in Collecting_Distributing state. The default mode preserves the existing behavior. This patch only introduces the knob; its behavior is implemented in the subsequent commit. In bond_do_ioctl(), slave_dev is obtained via __dev_get_by_name() which can return NULL if the requested interface name does not exist. This results in a NULL pointer dereference kernel oops when a user calls bonding ioctl (e.g. SIOCBONDENSLAVE, SIOCBONDRELEASE, etc.) with a non-existent slave interface name. This is reachable from userspace via the bonding ioctl interface with CAP_NET_ADMIN capability, making it a potential local denial-of-service vector. 2026-05-27bonding: refuse to enslave CAN devicesOliver Hartkopp
syzbot reported a kernel paging request crash in can_rx_unregister() inside net/can/af_can.c. The crash occurs because a virtual CAN device (vxcan) is being enslaved to a bonding master. During the enslavement process, the bonding driver mutates and modifies the network device states to fit an Ethernet-like aggregation model. However, CAN devices operate on a completely different Layer 2 architecture, relying on the CAN mid-layer private data structure (can_ml_priv) instead of standard Ethernet structures. Since bonding does not initialize or maintain these CAN structures, subsequent operations on the half-enslaved interface (such as closing associated sockets via isotp_release) lead to a null-pointer dereference when accessing the CAN receiver lists. Bonding CAN interfaces is architecturally invalid as CAN lacks MAC addresses, ARP capabilities, and standard Ethernet link-layer mechanisms. While generic loopback devices are blocked globally in net/core/dev.c, virtual CAN devices bypass this check because they do not carry the IFF_LOOPBACK flag, despite acting as local software-loopbacks. Fix this by explicitly blocking network devices of type ARPHRD_CAN from being enslaved at the very beginning of bond_enslave(). This prevents illegal state mutations, eliminates the resulting KASAN crashes, and avoids potential memory leaks from incomplete socket cleanups. As the CAN support has been added a long time after bonding the Fixes-tag points to the introduction of ARPHRD_CAN that would have needed a specific handling in bonding_main.c. The resulting hash values are exposed to userspace through readdir seek positions, and the pointer-based ordering in kernfs_name_compare() is observable through entry order. Switch from raw pointers to ns_common::ns_id for both hashing and comparison. A preparatory commit first replaces all const void * namespace parameters with const struct ns_common * throughout kernfs, sysfs, and kobject so the code can access ns->ns_id. Also compare the ns_id when hashes match in the rbtree to handle crafted collisions. Also fix eventpoll RCU grace period issue and a cachefiles refcount problem" * tag 'vfs-7.0-rc8.fixes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs: kernfs: make directory seek namespace-aware kernfs: use namespace id instead of pointer for hashing and comparison kernfs: pass struct ns_common instead of const void * for namespace tags eventpoll: defer struct eventpoll free to RCU grace period cachefiles: fix incorrect dentry refcount in cachefiles_cull()
2026-04-09kernfs: pass struct ns_common instead of const void * for namespace tagsChristian Brauner
kernfs has historically used const void * to pass around namespace tags used for directory-level namespace filtering. The only current user of this is sysfs network namespace tagging where struct net pointers are cast to void *. Replace all const void * namespace parameters with const struct ns_common * throughout the kernfs, sysfs, and kobject namespace layers. This includes the kobj_ns_type_operations callbacks, kobject_namespace(), and all sysfs/kernfs APIs that accept or return namespace tags. Passing struct ns_common is needed because various codepaths require access to the underlying namespace. A struct ns_common can always be converted back to the concrete namespace type (e.g., struct net) via container_of() or to_ns_common() in the reverse direction. This is a preparatory change for switching to ns_id-based directory iteration to prevent a KASLR pointer leak through the current use of raw namespace pointers as hash seeds and comparison keys. 2026-03-31net: bonding: fix use-after-free in bond_xmit_broadcast()Xiang Mei
bond_xmit_broadcast() reuses the original skb for the last slave (determined by bond_is_last_slave()) and clones it for others. Concurrent slave enslave/release can mutate the slave list during RCU-protected iteration, changing which slave is "last" mid-loop. This causes the original skb to be double-consumed (double-freed). Replace the racy bond_is_last_slave() check with a simple index comparison (i + 1 == slaves_count) against the pre-snapshot slave count taken via READ_ONCE() before the loop. This preserves the zero-copy optimization for the last slave while making the "last" determination stable against concurrent list mutations. The UAF can trigger the following crash: ================================================================== BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in skb_clone Read of size 8 at addr ffff888100ef8d40 by task exploit/147 CPU: 1 UID: 0 PID: 147 Comm: exploit Not tainted 7.0.0-rc3+ #4 PREEMPTLAZY Call Trace: <TASK> dump_stack_lvl (lib/dump_stack.c:123) print_report (mm/kasan/report.c:379 mm/kasan/report.c:482) kasan_report (mm/kasan/report.c:597) skb_clone (include/linux/skbuff.h:1724 include/linux/skbuff.h:1792 include/linux/skbuff.h:3396 net/core/skbuff.c:2108) bond_xmit_broadcast (drivers/net/bonding/bond_main.c:5334) bond_start_xmit (drivers/net/bonding/bond_main.c:5567 drivers/net/bonding/bond_main.c:5593) dev_hard_start_xmit (include/linux/netdevice.h:5325 include/linux/netdevice.h:5334 net/core/dev.c:3871 net/core/dev.c:3887) __dev_queue_xmit (include/linux/netdevice.h:3601 net/core/dev.c:4838) ip6_finish_output2 (include/net/neighbour.h:540 include/net/neighbour.h:554 net/ipv6/ip6_output.c:136) ip6_finish_output (net/ipv6/ip6_output.c:208 net/ipv6/ip6_output.c:219) ip6_output (net/ipv6/ip6_output.c:250) ip6_send_skb (net/ipv6/ip6_output.c:1985) udp_v6_send_skb (net/ipv6/udp.c:1442) udpv6_sendmsg (net/ipv6/udp.c:1733) __sys_sendto (net/socket.c:730 net/socket.c:742 net/socket.c:2206) __x64_sys_sendto (net/socket.c:2209) do_syscall_64 (arch/x86/entry/syscall_64.c:63 arch/x86/entry/syscall_64.c:94) entry_SYSCALL_64_after_hwframe (arch/x86/entry/entry_64.S:130) </TASK> Allocated by task 147: Freed by task 147: The buggy address belongs to the object at ffff888100ef8c80 which belongs to the cache skbuff_head_cache of size 224 The buggy address is located 192 bytes inside of freed 224-byte region [ffff888100ef8c80, ffff888100ef8d60) Memory state around the buggy address: ffff888100ef8c00: fb fb fb fb fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc ffff888100ef8c80: fa fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb >ffff888100ef8d00: fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fc fc fc fc ^ ffff888100ef8d80: fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fc fa fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ffff888100ef8e00: fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb fb ================================================================== Fixes: 4e5bd03ae346 ("net: bonding: fix bond_xmit_broadcast return value error bug") Reported-by: Weiming Shi <bestswngs@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Xiang Mei <xmei5@asu.edu> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260326075553.3960562-1-xmei5@asu.edu Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
2026-03-20bonding: remove bonding_priv.hBreno Leitao
bonding_priv.h only defined DRV_NAME and DRV_DESCRIPTION, but caused unnecessary recompilation: it included <generated/utsrelease.h> to define bond_version, which is used solely in bond_procfs.c. With CONFIG_LOCALVERSION_AUTO=y, utsrelease.h is regenerated on every git commit, so any git operation triggered recompilation of bond_main.c which also included bonding_priv.h. Remove the header entirely, as suggested by Jakub, given the macros on this file can be integrated into the C files directly. 2026-03-18net: bonding: fix NULL deref in bond_debug_rlb_hash_showXiang Mei
rlb_clear_slave intentionally keeps RLB hash-table entries on the rx_hashtbl_used_head list with slave set to NULL when no replacement slave is available. 2026-03-11net: bonding: Fix nd_tbl NULL dereference when IPv6 is disabledRicardo B. Marlière
When booting with the 'ipv6.disable=1' parameter, the nd_tbl is never initialized because inet6_init() exits before ndisc_init() is called which initializes it. If bonding ARP/NS validation is enabled, an IPv6 NS/NA packet received on a slave can reach bond_validate_na(), which calls bond_has_this_ip6(). That path calls ipv6_chk_addr() and can crash in __ipv6_chk_addr_and_flags(). Functions like ipgre_header(), ip6gre_header(),all use netdev_priv(dev) to access their device-specific private data. When called with the bond device, netdev_priv() returns the bond's private data (struct bonding) instead of the expected type (e.g. struct ip_tunnel), leading to garbage values being read and kernel crashes. Fix this by introducing bond_header_ops with wrapper functions that delegate to the active slave's header_ops using the slave's own device. This ensures netdev_priv() in the slave's header functions always receives the correct device. The fix is placed in the bonding driver rather than individual device drivers, as the root cause is bond blindly inheriting header_ops from the slave without considering that these callbacks expect a specific netdev_priv() layout. The type confusion can be observed by adding a printk in ipgre_header() and running the following commands: ip link add dummy0 type dummy ip addr add 10.0.0.1/24 dev dummy0 ip link set dummy0 up ip link add gre1 type gre local 10.0.0.1 ip link add bond1 type bond mode active-backup ip link set gre1 master bond1 ip link set gre1 up ip link set bond1 up ip addr add fe80::1/64 dev bond1 Fixes: 1284cd3a2b74 ("bonding: two small fixes for IPoIB support") Suggested-by: Jay Vosburgh <jv@jvosburgh.net> Reviewed-by: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com> Signed-off-by: Jiayuan Chen <jiayuan.chen@shopee.com> Link: https://patch.msgid.link/20260306021508.222062-1-jiayuan.chen@linux.dev Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
2026-03-06bonding: handle BOND_LINK_FAIL, BOND_LINK_BACK as valid link statesHangbin Liu
Before the fixed commit, we check slave->new_link during commit state, which values are only BOND_LINK_{NOCHANGE, UP, DOWN}. After the commit, we start using slave->link_new_state, which state also could be BOND_LINK_{FAIL, BACK}. For example, when we set updelay/downdelay, after a failover, the slave->link_new_state could be set to BOND_LINK_{FAIL, BACK} in bond_miimon_inspect(). And later in bond_miimon_commit(), it will treat it as invalid and print an error, which would cause confusion for users. [ 106.440254] bond0: (slave veth2): link status down for interface, disabling it in 200 ms [ 106.440265] bond0: (slave veth2): invalid new link 1 on slave [ 106.648276] bond0: (slave veth2): link status definitely down, disabling slave [ 107.480271] bond0: (slave veth2): link status up, enabling it in 200 ms [ 107.480288] bond0: (slave veth2): invalid new link 3 on slave [ 107.688302] bond0: (slave veth2): link status definitely up, 10000 Mbps full duplex Let's handle BOND_LINK_{FAIL, BACK} as valid link states. 2026-03-06bonding: do not set usable_slaves for broadcast modeHangbin Liu
After commit e0caeb24f538 ("net: bonding: update the slave array for broadcast mode"), broadcast mode will also set all_slaves and usable_slaves during bond_enslave(). But if we also set updelay, during enslave, the slave init state will be BOND_LINK_BACK. And later bond_update_slave_arr() will alloc usable_slaves but add nothing. This will cause bond_miimon_inspect() to have ignore_updelay always true. So the updelay will be always ignored. e.g. [ 6.498368] bond0: (slave veth2): link status definitely down, disabling slave [ 7.536371] bond0: (slave veth2): link status up, enabling it in 0 ms [ 7.536402] bond0: (slave veth2): link status definitely up, 10000 Mbps full duplex To fix it, we can either always call bond_update_slave_arr() on every place when link changes. Or, let's just not set usable_slaves for broadcast mode. 2026-03-03bpf/bonding: reject vlan+srcmac xmit_hash_policy change when XDP is loadedJiayuan Chen
bond_option_mode_set() already rejects mode changes that would make a loaded XDP program incompatible via bond_xdp_check(). However, bond_option_xmit_hash_policy_set() has no such guard. For 802.3ad and balance-xor modes, bond_xdp_check() returns false when xmit_hash_policy is vlan+srcmac, because the 802.1q payload is usually absent due to hardware offload. This means a user can: 1. Attach a native XDP program to a bond in 802.3ad/balance-xor mode with a compatible xmit_hash_policy (e.g. layer2+3). 2. Change xmit_hash_policy to vlan+srcmac while XDP remains loaded. This leaves bond->xdp_prog set but bond_xdp_check() now returning false for the same device. When the bond is later destroyed, dev_xdp_uninstall() calls bond_xdp_set(dev, NULL, NULL) to remove the program, which hits the bond_xdp_check() guard and returns -EOPNOTSUPP, triggering: WARN_ON(dev_xdp_install(dev, mode, bpf_op, NULL, 0, NULL)) Fix this by rejecting xmit_hash_policy changes to vlan+srcmac when an XDP program is loaded on a bond in 802.3ad or balance-xor mode. commit 39a0876d595b ("net, bonding: Disallow vlan+srcmac with XDP") introduced bond_xdp_check() which returns false for 802.3ad/balance-xor modes when xmit_hash_policy is vlan+srcmac. The check was wired into bond_xdp_set() to reject XDP attachment with an incompatible policy, but the symmetric path -- preventing xmit_hash_policy from being changed to an incompatible value after XDP is already loaded -- was left unguarded in bond_option_xmit_hash_policy_set(). Note: commit 094ee6017ea0 ("bonding: check xdp prog when set bond mode") later added a similar guard to bond_option_mode_set(), but bond_option_xmit_hash_policy_set() remained unprotected. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_flex' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This is the exact same thing as the 'alloc_obj()' version, only much smaller because there are a lot fewer users of the *alloc_flex() interface. As with alloc_obj() version, this was done entirely with mindless brute force, using the same script, except using 'flex' in the pattern rather than 'objs*'. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2026-02-19bonding: alb: fix UAF in rlb_arp_recv during bond up/downHangbin Liu
The ALB RX path may access rx_hashtbl concurrently with bond teardown. During rapid bond up/down cycles, rlb_deinitialize() frees rx_hashtbl while RX handlers are still running, leading to a null pointer dereference detected by KASAN. However, the root cause is that rlb_arp_recv() can still be accessed after setting recv_probe to NULL, which is actually a use-after-free (UAF) issue. Fix this by setting recv_probe to NULL and then calling synchronize_net() to wait for any concurrent RX processing to finish. This ensures that no RX handler can access rx_hashtbl after it is freed in bond_alb_deinitialize().
