2023-11-16selftests: tc-testing: rework namespaces and devices setupPedro Tammela
As mentioned in the TC Workshop 0x17, our recent changes to tdc broke downstream CI systems like tuxsuite. The issue is the classic problem with rcu/workqueue objects where you can miss them if not enough wall time has passed. The latter is subjective to the system and kernel config, in my machine could be nanoseconds while in another could be microseconds or more. In order to make the suite deterministic, poll for the existence of the objects in a reasonable manner. Talking netlink directly is the the best solution in order to avoid paying the cost of multiple 'fork()' calls, so introduce a netlink based setup routine using pyroute2. We leave the iproute2 one as a fallback when pyroute2 is not available. Also rework the iproute2 side to mimic the netlink routine where it creates DEV0 as the peer of DEV1 and moves DEV1 into the net namespace. This way when the namespace is deleted DEV0 is also deleted automatically, leaving no margin for resource leaks. Another bonus of this change is that our setup time sped up by a factor of 2 when using netlink. Drop it as it's the same as commenting out the nsPlugin from a test and adds additional complexity to the plugin code. 2023-09-28selftests/tc-testing: implement tdc parallel test runPedro Tammela
Use a Python process pool to run the tests in parallel. Not all tests can run in parallel, for instance tests that are not namespaced and tests that use netdevsim, as they can conflict with one another. The code logic will split the tests into serial and parallel. For the parallel tests, we build batches of 32 tests and queue each batch on the process pool. For the serial tests, they are queued as a whole into the process pool, which in turn executes them concurrently with the parallel tests. Even though the tests serialize on rtnl_lock in the kernel, this feature showed results with a ~3x speedup on the wall time for the entire test suite running in a VM: Before - 4m32.502s After - 1m19.202s Examples: In order to run tdc using 4 processes: ./tdc.py -J4 <...> In order to run tdc using 1 process: ./tdc.py -J1 <...> || ./tdc.py <...> Note that the kernel configuration will affect the speed of the tests, especially if such configuration slows down process creation and/or fork(). 2023-09-28selftests/tc-testing: localize test resourcesPedro Tammela
As of today, the current tdc architecture creates one netns and uses it to run all tests. This assumption was embedded into the nsPlugin which carried over as how the tests were written. The tdc tests are by definition self contained and can, theoretically, run in parallel. Even though in the kernel they will serialize over the rtnl lock, we should expect a significant speedup of the total wall time for the entire test suite, which is hitting close to 1100 tests at this point. A first step to achieve this goal is to remove sharing of global resources like veth/dummy interfaces and the netns. In this patch we 'localize' these resources on a per test basis. Each test gets it's own netns, VETH/dummy interfaces. The resources are spawned in the pre_suite phase, where tdc will prepare all netns and interfaces for all tests. This is done in order to avoid concurrency issues with netns / interfaces spawning and commands using them. As tdc progresses, the resources are deleted after each test finishes executing. Tests that don't use the nsPlugin still run under the root namespace, but are now required to manage any external resources like interfaces. These cannot be parallelized as their definition doesn't allow it. On the other hand, when using the nsPlugin, tests don't need to create dummy/veth interfaces as these are handled already. The reason behind commit af7b29b1deaa ("Revert "net/sched: taprio: make qdisc_leaf() see the per-netdev-queue pfifo child qdiscs"") was that the patch it reverted caused a crash when attaching a CBS shaper to one of the taprio classes. Prevent that from happening again by adding a test case for it, which now passes correctly in both offload and software modes. 2023-08-09selftests/tc-testing: test that taprio can only be attached as rootVladimir Oltean
Check that the "Can only be attached as root qdisc" error message from taprio is effective by attempting to attach it to a class of another taprio qdisc. That operation should fail. In the bug that was squashed by change "net/sched: taprio: try again to report q->qdiscs[] to qdisc_leaf()", grafting a child taprio to a root software taprio would be misinterpreted as a change() to the root taprio. Catch this by looking at whether the base-time of the root taprio has changed to follow the base-time of the child taprio, something which should have absolutely never happened assuming correct semantics. Vinicius points out that looking at "base_time" in the tc qdisc show output is unreliable because user space is in a race with the kernel applying the setting. So we create a helper bash script which waits while there is any pending schedule. 2023-08-09net/sched: taprio: dump class stats for the actual q->qdiscs[]Vladimir Oltean
This makes a difference for the software scheduling mode, where dev_queue->qdisc_sleeping is the same as the taprio root Qdisc itself, but when we're talking about what Qdisc and stats get reported for a traffic class, the root taprio isn't what comes to mind, but q->qdiscs[] is. To understand the difference, I've attempted to send 100 packets in software mode through class 8001:5, and recorded the stats before and after the change. Finally, Pedro Tammela points out that there is a tc selftest which checks specifically which handle do the child Qdiscs corresponding to each class have. That's changing here - taprio no longer reports tcm->tcm_info as the same handle "1:" as itself (the root Qdisc), but 0 (the handle of the default pfifo child Qdiscs). Since iproute2 does not print a child Qdisc handle of 0, adjust the test's expected output. 2023-07-31net/sched: taprio: Limit TCA_TAPRIO_ATTR_SCHED_CYCLE_TIME to INT_MAX.Kuniyuki Iwashima
syzkaller found zero division error [0] in div_s64_rem() called from get_cycle_time_elapsed(), where sched->cycle_time is the divisor. We have tests in parse_taprio_schedule() so that cycle_time will never be 0, and actually cycle_time is not 0 in get_cycle_time_elapsed(). The problem is that the types of divisor are different; cycle_time is s64, but the argument of div_s64_rem() is s32. syzkaller fed this input and 0x100000000 is cast to s32 to be 0. @TCA_TAPRIO_ATTR_SCHED_CYCLE_TIME={0xc, 0x8, 0x100000000} We use s64 for cycle_time to cast it to ktime_t, so let's keep it and set max for cycle_time. While at it, we prevent overflow in setup_txtime() and add another test in parse_taprio_schedule() to check if cycle_time overflows. Also, we add a new tdc test case for this issue. When looking at the TC selftest reports, I noticed one test was failing because /proc/net/nf_conntrack was not available. not ok 373 3992 - Add ct action triggering DNAT tuple conflict Could not match regex pattern. Verify command output: cat: /proc/net/nf_conntrack: No such file or directory It is only available if NF_CONNTRACK_PROCFS kconfig is set. So the issue can be fixed simply by adding it to the list of required kconfig. 2023-07-18selftests: tc: add 'ct' action kconfig depMatthieu Baerts
When looking for something else in LKFT reports [1], I noticed most of the tests were skipped because the "teardown stage" did not complete successfully. Pedro found out this is due to the fact CONFIG_NF_FLOW_TABLE is required but not listed in the 'config' file. Adding it to the list fixes the issues on LKFT side. CONFIG_NET_ACT_CT is now set to 'm' in the final kconfig. When looking for something else in LKFT reports [1], I noticed that the TC selftest ended with a timeout error: not ok 1 selftests: tc-testing: tdc.sh # TIMEOUT 45 seconds The timeout had been introduced 3 years ago, see the Fixes commit below. This timeout is only in place when executing the selftests via the kselftests runner scripts. I guess this is not what most TC devs are using and nobody noticed the issue before. The new timeout is set to 15 minutes as suggested by Pedro [2]. It looks like it is plenty more time than what it takes in "normal" conditions. 2023-04-21net/sched: sch_fq: fix integer overflow of "credit"Davide Caratti
if sch_fq is configured with "initial quantum" having values greater than INT_MAX, the first assignment of "credit" does signed integer overflow to a very negative value. In this situation, the syzkaller script provided by Cristoph triggers the CPU soft-lockup warning even with few sockets. It's not an infinite loop, but "credit" wasn't probably meant to be minus 2Gb for each new flow. currently, users can skip individual test cases by means of writing "skip": "yes" in the scenario file. Extend this functionality, introducing 'dependsOn': it's optional property like "skip", but the value contains a command (for example, a probe on iproute2 to check if it supports a specific feature). This allows the use of a matchJSON field in tests to match against JSON output from the command under test, if that command outputs JSON. You specify what you want to match against as a JSON array or object in the test's matchJSON field. You can leave out any fields you don't want to match against that are present in the output and they will be skipped. An example matchJSON value would look like this: "matchJSON": [ { "Value": { "neighIP": { "family": 4, "addr": "AQIDBA==", "width": 32 }, "nsflags": 142, "ncflags": 0, "LLADDR": "ESIzRFVm" } } ] The real output from the command under test might have some extra fields that we don't care about for matching, and since we didn't include them in our matchJSON value, those fields will not be attempted to be matched. If everything we included above has the same values as the real command output, the test will pass. The matchJSON field's type must be the same as the command output's type, otherwise the test will fail. So if the command outputs an array, then the value of matchJSON must also be an array. If matchJSON is an array, it must not contain more elements than the command output's array, otherwise the test will fail.
