The destination of an alias is always another register, i.e. a `struct`
type. Replace the `ident` fragment with a `path` one in the internal
rules: `path` is more accurate, and allows referencing registers using a
qualified path instead of only identifiers visible from the current
module.
This covers all aliases, except the relative register ones which are to
be removed soon.
The public rule cannot be updated yet because a `+` can still be matched
after the alias; add a TODO item to update it after relative registers
are removed.

A couple of shortcut rules redispatch an already normalized declaration
through the public register! entry point. This is unneeded - the public
rule should only be invoked by users.
Dispatch directly to the appropriate internal @reg rule instead.

This series presents a major rework of I/O types, as a summary:
- Make I/O regions typed. The existing untyped region still exists
with a dynamically sized `Region` type.
- Create I/O view types to represent subregion of a full I/O region mapped.
A projection macro is added to allow safely create such subviews.
- Split I/O traits, make I/O views play a central role, avoid
duplicate monomorphization and less `unsafe` code.
- Add a `SysMem` backend, and make `Coherent` implement `Io`.
- Add copying methods (memcpy_{from,to}io and friends).
This series generalize `Mmio` type from just an untyped region to typed
representations (so `MmioRaw<T>` is `__iomem *T`). This allows us to remove
the `IoKnownSize` trait; the information is sourced from just the pointer
from the `KnownSize` trait instead.
Building on top of that, `Mmio` and `ConfigSpace` have been converted to
typed views of I/O regions rather than just a big chunk of untyped I/O
memory. These changes made it possible to implement `Io` trait for
`Coherent<T>`.
Shared system memory, `SysMem` is also added to the series, given it
similarity in implementation compared to `Coherent`. In fact, the series
use `SysMem` to implement `Coherent`'s I/O methods.
Built on these generalization, this series add `io_project!()`.
`io_project!()` performs a safe way to project a bigger view to a small
subviews, and some Nova code has been converted in this series to
demonstrate cleanups possible with this addition.
New `io_read!()`, `io_write!()` has been added that supersedes
`dma_read!()`, `dma_write!()` macro. Although, they work for primitives
only (to be exact, types that the backend is `IoCapable` of).
One feature that was lost from the old `dma_read!()` and `dma_write!()`
series was the ability to read/write a large structs. However, the
semantics was unclear to begin with, as there was no guarantee about their
atomicity even for structs that were small enough to fit in u32.

The ForLt trait currently guarantees covariance, which allows safe
lifetime shortening via cast_ref(). However, some types (e.g. those
containing Mutex<&'bound T>) are invariant over their lifetime parameter
and cannot safely use cast_ref().
This series splits ForLt into two traits:
- ForLt: base trait for all lifetime-parameterized types, providing
only the Of<'a> GAT.
- CovariantForLt: unsafe subtrait that guarantees covariance,
providing a safe cast_ref() method.
For invariant types, a closure-based API (registration_data_with()) is
added to the auxiliary subsystem. The closure's HRTB prevents the caller
from choosing a concrete lifetime, which would be unsound for invariant
types.
On top of that, this series adds DevresLt<F: ForLt>, a thin wrapper
around Devres<F::Of<'static>> that shortens the stored 'static lifetime
back to the caller's borrow scope. DevresLt provides both closure-based
access (access_with/try_access_with for ForLt types) and direct
reference access (access/try_access for CovariantForLt types).
Also implement ForLt and CovariantForLt for Bar, IoMem and
ExclusiveIoMem, and update their into_devres() methods to return
DevresLt. Provide convenience type aliases DevresBar, DevresIoMem and
DevresExclusiveIoMem.

Implement ForLt and CovariantForLt for IoMem<'static, SIZE> and
ExclusiveIoMem<'static, SIZE> so that DevresLt can shorten the stored
'static lifetime back to the caller's borrow lifetime.
CovariantForLt is sound because both types only hold &'a Device<Bound>,
which is covariant over 'a.
Since DevresLt::new() handles the lifetime transmutation internally,
into_devres() no longer needs an explicit transmute to 'static.
Add DevresIoMem<SIZE> and DevresExclusiveIoMem<SIZE> type aliases.

`Io` trait now has a single required method with many more provided
methods. Provided methods may want to rely on their implementations to not
be arbitrarily overridden by implementers for correctness or soundness.
A good example is the `size` method, it may be relied by unsafe code and
thus must be consistent with the metadata obtained from `as_ptr`.
Thus, create a new trait to host `size` method, extract existing provided
methods to the new trait, and provide a blanket implementation. This
pattern is used extensively in userspace Rust libraries e.g. `tokio` where
`AsyncRead` has minimum methods and `AsyncReadExt` is what users mostly
interact with.
To avoid changing all user imports, the base trait is renamed to `IoBase`
and the newly added trait takes the existing `Io` name.

Implement `Mmio` as view type and convert `RelaxedMmio` to view type as
well. I/O implementations of `MmioOwned` are changed to delegate to the
`Mmio` view type.
All existing users of `MmioOwned` in the documentation which do not
actually reflect the owning semantics is converted.

Most users would more commonly reach out to a view of `Mmio` rather than an
owned instance of `Mmio`. Only implementor of `Io` like `Bar` or `IoMem`
would need the owned version. Thus, rename `Mmio` to `MmioOwned` so that
the name `Mmio` can be used for the view type instead.

Conceptually, `MmioRaw` is just `__iomem *`, so it should work for any
types. Update the existing use case where it represents a region of
compile-time known minimum size and run-time known actual size to use the
dynamic-sized type `Region<SIZE>` instead. Rename `maxsize` method to
reflect that it is the actual size (not a bound) of the region.
Implement `Clone` and `Copy` manually, which cannot be derived due to the
generic parameter. The use of raw pointers also cause the `Send` and `Sync`
auto trait implementation to be lost, so add them back by manual
implementation.

Currently the `Io` trait exposes a bunch of untyped IO accesses, but if the
`Io` region itself is typed, then it might be weird to have
let io: Mmio<u32> = /* ... */;
io.read8(1);
while not unsound, it is surely strange. Thus, restrict the untyped methods
and also the register macro to `Region` type only.
Implement it by adding a generic type to `IoLoc` indicating allowed base
types. This also paves the way to add typed register blocks in the future;
for example, we could use this mechanism to block driver A's `register!()`
generated macro from being used on driver B's MMIO. The same mechanism
could be used for relative IO registers. These are future opportunities,
and for now restrict everything to require `IoLoc<Region<SIZE>, _>`.

In this example, an u32 register is split in two u8 in big-endian order,
but the high byte is actually defined as taking nine bits instead of
eight.
This is completely inconsequential, as I expect most users will just
copy the bit ranges from their datasheets, but it doesn’t hurt to fix
that typo.

Fix missing match data for PRP0001 by exporting
acpi_of_match_device()

Replace drvdata() with dedicated registration data on
auxiliary_device. drvdata() exposed the driver's bus device private
data beyond the driver's own scope, creating ordering constraints
and forcing the data to outlive all registrations that access it.
Registration data is instead scoped structurally to the
Registration object, making lifecycle ordering enforced by
construction rather than convention.
- Rust-native device driver lifetimes (HRT):
Allow Rust device drivers to carry a lifetime parameter on their
bus device private data, tied to the device binding scope -- the
interval during which a bus device is bound to a driver. Device
resources like pci::Bar<'a> and IoMem<'a> can be stored directly in
the driver's bus device private data with a lifetime bounded by the
binding scope, so the compiler enforces at build time that they do
not outlive the binding. This removes Devres indirection from every
access site and eliminates try_access() failure paths in
destructors.
Bus driver traits use a Generic Associated Type (GAT) Data<'bound>
to introduce the lifetime on the private data, rather than
parameterizing the Driver trait itself. Auxiliary registration
data, where the lifetime is not introduced by a trait callback but
must be threaded through Registration, uses the ForLt trait (a
type-level abstraction for types generic over a lifetime).

Given the macro scoping rules, all macros are rendered twice, in the
module and in the top-level of kernel crate.
Add `#[doc(hidden)]` to the macro definition and `#[doc(inline)]` to the
re-export inside `build_assert` module so the top-level items are hidden.
[ Sadly, because the definition is hidden, `rustdoc` decides to not list
them as re-exports in the `prelude` page anymore, even if we refer to
the not-actually-hidden item.

Add a lifetime parameter to IoMem<'a, SIZE> and ExclusiveIoMem<'a,
SIZE>, storing a &'a Device<Bound> reference to tie the mapping to the
device's lifetime.
This mirrors the pci::Bar<'a, SIZE> design and enables drivers to hold
I/O memory mappings directly in their HRT private data, tied to the
device lifetime.
IoRequest::iomap_* methods now return the mapping directly instead of
wrapping it in Devres. Callers that need device-managed revocation can
call the new into_devres() method.

Add a 'bound lifetime to the associated Data, changing type Data to type
Data<'bound>.
This allows the driver's bus device private data to capture the device /
driver bound lifetime; device resources can be stored directly by
reference rather than requiring Devres.
The probe() and unbind() callbacks thus gain a 'bound lifetime parameter
on the methods themselves; avoiding a global lifetime on the trait impl.
Existing drivers set type Data<'bound> = Self, preserving the current
behavior.

Add a type Data<'bound> associated type to all bus driver traits,
decoupling the driver's bus device private data type from the driver
struct itself.
In the context of adding a 'bound lifetime, making this an associated
type has the advantage that it allows us to avoid a driver trait global
lifetime and it avoids the need for ForLt for bus device private data;
both of which make the subsequent implementation by buses much simpler.
All existing drivers and doc examples set type Data = Self to preserve
the current behavior.

Some I/O types, like fixed address registers, carry their location
alongside their values. For these types, the regular `Io::write` method
can lead into repeating the location information twice: once to provide
the location itself, another time to build the value.
We are also considering supporting making all register values carry
their full location information for convenience and safety.
Add a new `Io::write_reg` method that takes a single argument
implementing `LocatedRegister`, a trait that decomposes implementors
into a `(location, value)` tuple. This allows write operations on fixed
offset registers to be done while specifying their name only once.

Add a macro for defining hardware register types with I/O accessors.
Each register field is represented as a `Bounded` of the appropriate bit
width, ensuring field values are never silently truncated.
Fields can optionally be converted to/from custom types, either fallibly
or infallibly.
The address of registers can be direct, relative, or indexed, supporting
most of the patterns in which registers are arranged.

The `_relaxed` I/O variant methods are about to be replaced by a wrapper
type exposing this access pattern with the regular methods of the `Io`
trait. Thus replace the examples to use the regular I/O methods.
Since these are examples, we want them to use the most standard ops
anyway, and the relaxed variants were but an addition that was
MMIO-specific.

The previous Io<SIZE> type combined both the generic I/O access helpers
and MMIO implementation details in a single struct. This coupling prevented
reusing the I/O helpers for other backends, such as PCI configuration
space.
Establish a clean separation between the I/O interface and concrete
backends by separating generic I/O helpers from MMIO implementation.
Introduce a new trait hierarchy to handle different access capabilities:
- IoCapable<T>: A marker trait indicating that a backend supports I/O
operations of a certain type (u8, u16, u32, or u64).
- Io trait: Defines fallible (try_read8, try_write8, etc.) and infallibile
(read8, write8, etc.) I/O methods with runtime bounds checking and
compile-time bounds checking.
- IoKnownSize trait: The marker trait for types support infallible I/O
methods.
Move the MMIO-specific logic into a dedicated Mmio<SIZE> type that
implements the Io traits. Rename IoRaw to MmioRaw and update consumers to
use the new types.

`build_assert` relies on the compiler to optimize out its error path.
Functions using it with its arguments must thus always be inlined,
otherwise the error path of `build_assert` might not be optimized out,
triggering a build error.

The C typedef phys_addr_t is missing an analogue in Rust, meaning that
we end up using bindings::phys_addr_t or ResourceSize as a replacement
in various places throughout the kernel. Fix that by introducing a new
typedef on the Rust side. Place it next to the existing ResourceSize
typedef since they're quite related to each other.

Resource sizes are a general concept for dealing with physical
addresses, and not specific to the Resource type, which is just one way
to access physical addresses. Thus, move the typedef to the io module.
Still keep a re-export under resource. This avoids this commit from
being a flag-day, but I also think it's a useful re-export in general so
that you can import
use kernel::io::resource::{Resource, ResourceSize};
instead of having to write
use kernel::io::{
resource::Resource,
ResourceSize,
};
in the specific cases where you need ResourceSize because you are using
the Resource type. Therefore I think it makes sense to keep this
re-export indefinitely and it is *not* intended as a temporary re-export
for migration purposes.

Commit 46f045db5a94 ("rust: Add read_poll_timeout_atomic function")
initiated the first import change in the I/O module using the agreed
"kernel vertical" import style [1].
For consistency throughout the module, adjust all other imports
accordingly.

Add read_poll_timeout_atomic function which polls periodically until a
condition is met, an error occurs, or the attempt limit is reached.
The C's read_poll_timeout_atomic() is used for the similar purpose.
In atomic context the timekeeping infrastructure is unavailable, so
reliable time-based timeouts cannot be implemented. So instead, the
helper accepts a maximum number of attempts and busy-waits (udelay +
cpu_relax) between tries.

The driver model defines the lifetime of the private data stored in (and
owned by) a bus device to be valid from when the driver is bound to a
device (i.e. from successful probe()) until the driver is unbound from
the device.
This is already taken care of by the Rust implementation of the driver
model. However, we still ask drivers to return a Result<Pin<KBox<Self>>>
from probe().
Unlike in C, where we do not have the concept of initializers, but
rather deal with uninitialized memory, drivers can just return an
impl PinInit<Self, Error> instead.
This contributes to more clarity to the fact that a driver returns it's
device private data in probe() and the Rust driver model owns the data,
manages the lifetime and - considering the lifetime - provides (safe)
accessors for the driver.
Hence, let probe() functions return an impl PinInit<Self, Error> instead
of Result<Pin<KBox<Self>>>.

Add read_poll_timeout function which polls periodically until a
condition is met, an error occurs, or the timeout is reached.
The C's read_poll_timeout (include/linux/iopoll.h) is a complicated
macro and a simple wrapper for Rust doesn't work. So this implements
the same functionality in Rust.
The C version uses usleep_range() while the Rust version uses
fsleep(), which uses the best sleep method so it works with spans that
usleep_range() doesn't work nicely with.
The sleep_before_read argument isn't supported since there is no user
for now. It's rarely used in the C version.

There is no `mod flags` in this case, unlike others. Instead, they are
associated constants for the `Flags` type.
Thus reword the sentence to fix the broken intra-doc link, providing

When introduced, the IoRequest doc-tests did depend on infrastructure
added in subsequent patches, hence they temporarily had to be disabled.
Now that we have the corresponding platform device infrastructure,
enable them.

The previous patches have added the abstractions for Resources and the
ability to map them and therefore read and write the underlying memory .
The only thing missing to make this accessible for platform devices is
to provide accessors that return instances of IoRequest<'a>. These
ensure that the resource are valid only for the lifetime of the platform
device, and that the platform device is in the Bound state.
Therefore, add these accessors. Also make it possible to retrieve
resources from platform devices in Rust using either a name or an index.

Add a generic iomem abstraction to safely read and write ioremapped
regions. This abstraction requires a previously acquired IoRequest
instance. This makes it so that both the resource and the device match,
or, in other words, that the resource is indeed a valid resource for a
given bound device.
A subsequent patch will add the ability to retrieve IoRequest instances
from platform devices.
The reads and writes are done through IoRaw, and are thus checked either
at compile-time, if the size of the region is known at that point, or at
runtime otherwise.
Non-exclusive access to the underlying memory region is made possible to
cater to cases where overlapped regions are unavoidable.

In preparation for ioremap support, add a Rust abstraction for struct
resource.
A future commit will introduce the Rust API to ioremap a resource from a
platform device. The current abstraction, therefore, adds only the
minimum API needed to get that done.
