Registration data is instead scoped structurally to the Registration object, making lifecycle ordering enforced by construction rather than convention. - Rust-native device driver lifetimes (HRT): Allow Rust device drivers to carry a lifetime parameter on their bus device private data, tied to the device binding scope -- the interval during which a bus device is bound to a driver. Device resources like pci::Bar<'a> and IoMem<'a> can be stored directly in the driver's bus device private data with a lifetime bounded by the binding scope, so the compiler enforces at build time that they do not outlive the binding. This removes Devres indirection from every access site and eliminates try_access() failure paths in destructors. Bus driver traits use a Generic Associated Type (GAT) Data<'bound> to introduce the lifetime on the private data, rather than parameterizing the Driver trait itself. Auxiliary registration data, where the lifetime is not introduced by a trait callback but must be threaded through Registration, uses the ForLt trait (a type-level abstraction for types generic over a lifetime). 2026-06-08rust: tests: add Kconfig for KUnit testYury Norov
There are 6 individual Rust KUnit test suites (plus the doctests one). All the tests are compiled unconditionally now, which adds ~200 kB to the kernel image for me on x86_64. As Rust matures, this bloating will inevitably grow. Add Kconfig.test which includes a RUST_KUNIT_TESTS menu, and all individual tests under it. As usual, new tests are all enabled if KUNIT_ALL_TESTS=y. 2026-05-12rust: alloc: fix assert in `Vec::reserve` doc testHsiu Che Yu
The assert in the doctest used `>= 10`, which only checks that the capacity can hold `additional` elements, ignoring the existing length of `v`. The correct check should ensure there is room for `additional` *extra* elements on top of what is already in the vector. Fix the assert to use `>= v.len() + 10` so the example accurately reflects the actual semantics of the function. 2026-04-07rust: alloc: simplify with `NonNull::add()` now that it is stableMiguel Ojeda
Currently, we need to go through raw pointers and then re-create the `NonNull` from the result of offsetting the raw pointer. `feature(non_null_convenience)` [1] has been stabilized in Rust 1.80.0 [2], which is older than our new minimum Rust version (Rust 1.85.0). Thus, now that we bump the Rust minimum version, simplify using `NonNull::add()` and clean the TODO note. Add comprehensive KUnit tests for the shrink_to method for KVVec. The tests verify: - Basic shrinking from multiple pages to fewer pages with data integrity preservation - Empty vector shrinking to zero capacity - No-op behavior when shrinking to a larger capacity than current - Respect for min_capacity parameter when larger than vector length These tests ensure that the shrinking logic correctly identifies when memory can be reclaimed (by freeing at least one page) and that data integrity is maintained throughout shrink operations. 2026-02-26rust: kvec: implement shrink_to for KVVecShivam Kalra
Implement shrink_to method specifically for `KVVec` (i.e., `Vec<T, KVmalloc>`). `shrink_to` reduces the vector's capacity to a specified minimum. For kmalloc-backed allocations, the method delegates to realloc(), letting the allocator decide whether shrinking is worthwhile. For vmalloc-backed allocations (detected via is_vmalloc_addr), shrinking only occurs if at least one page of memory can be freed, using an explicit alloc+copy+free since vrealloc does not yet support in-place shrinking. A TODO note marks this for future replacement with a generic shrink_to for all allocators that uses A::realloc() once the underlying allocators properly support shrinking via realloc. 2025-08-24rust: alloc: remove `allocator_test`Miguel Ojeda
Given we do not have tests that rely on it anymore, remove `allocator_test`, which simplifies the complexity of the build. In particular, it avoids potential issues with `rusttest`, such as the one fixed at [1], where a public function was added to `Kmalloc` and used elsewhere, but it was not added to `Cmalloc`; or trivial issues like a missing import [2] due to not many people testing that target. The only downside is that we cannot use it in the `macros`' crate examples anymore, but we did not feel a need for that so far, and anyway we could support that by running those within the kernel too, which we may do regardless. When converting a Box<T> into a void pointer, the allocator might guarantee a higher alignment than the type itself does, and in that case it is guaranteed that the void pointer has that higher alignment. This is quite useful when combined with the XArray, which you can only create using a ForeignOwnable whose FOREIGN_ALIGN is at least 4. This means that you can now always use a Box<T> with the XArray no matter the alignment of T. The kernel's allocators sometimes provide a higher alignment than the end-user requested, so add a new constant on the Allocator trait to let the allocator specify what its minimum guaranteed alignment is. This allows the ForeignOwnable trait to provide a more accurate value of FOREIGN_ALIGN when using a pointer type such as Box, which will be useful with certain collections such as XArray that store its own data in the low bits of pointers. aligned_size() dates back to when Rust did support kmalloc() only, but is now used in ReallocFunc::call() and hence for all allocators. However, the additional padding applied by aligned_size() is only required by the kmalloc() allocator backend. Hence, replace aligned_size() with Kmalloc::aligned_layout() and use it for the affected allocators, i.e. kmalloc() and kvmalloc(), only. While at it, make Kmalloc::aligned_layout() public, such that Rust abstractions, which have to call subsystem specific kmalloc() based allocation primitives directly, can make use of it. The current implementation of `ForeignOwnable` is leaking the type of the opaque pointer to consumers of the API. This allows consumers of the opaque pointer to rely on the information that can be extracted from the pointer type. To prevent this, change the API to the version suggested by Maira Canal (link below): Remove `ForeignOwnable::PointedTo` in favor of a constant, which specifies the alignment of the pointers returned by `into_foreign`. With this change, `ArcInner` no longer needs `pub` visibility, so change it to private. In Rust 1.51.0, Clippy introduced the `ptr_as_ptr` lint [1]: > Though `as` casts between raw pointers are not terrible, > `pointer::cast` is safer because it cannot accidentally change the > pointer's mutability, nor cast the pointer to other types like `usize`. There are a few classes of changes required: - Modules generated by bindgen are marked `#[allow(clippy::ptr_as_ptr)]`. - Inferred casts (` as _`) are replaced with `.cast()`. - Ascribed casts (` as *... T`) are replaced with `.cast::<T>()`. - Multistep casts from references (` as *const _ as *const T`) are replaced with `core::ptr::from_ref(&x).cast()` with or without `::<T>` according to the previous rules. The `core::ptr::from_ref` call is required because `(x as *const _).cast::<T>()` results in inference failure. - Native literal C strings are replaced with `c_str!().as_char_ptr()`. - `*mut *mut T as _` is replaced with `let *mut *const T = (*mut *mut T)`.cast();` since pointer to pointer can be confusing.
