2026-06-02sched/fair: Remove task_group->se pointer arrayZecheng Li
Now that struct sched_entity is co-located with struct cfs_rq for non-root task groups, the task_group->se pointer array is redundant. The associated sched_entity can be loaded directly from the cfs_rq. This patch performs the access conversion with the helpers: - is_root_task_group(tg): checks if a task group is the root task group. It compares the task group's address with the global root_task_group variable. - tg_se(tg, cpu): retrieves the cfs_rq and returns the address of the co-located se. This function checks if tg is the root task group to ensure behaving the same of previous tg->se[cpu]. Replaces all accesses that use the tg->se[cpu] pointer array with calls to the new tg_se(tg, cpu) accessor. - cfs_rq_se(cfs_rq): simplifies access paths like cfs_rq->tg->se[...] to use the co-located sched_entity. This function also checks if tg is the root task group to ensure same behavior. Since tg_se is not in very hot code paths, and the branch is a register comparison with an immediate value (`&root_task_group`), the performance impact is expected to be negligible. 2026-05-29sched/deadline: Reject debugfs dl_server writes for offline CPUsAndrea Righi
Writing runtime or period via the per-CPU dl_server debugfs files (/sys/kernel/debug/sched/{fair,ext}_server/cpu*/{runtime,period}) on an offline CPU can trigger two distinct kernel issues: 1) Divide-by-zero in dl_server_apply_params(): Oops: divide error: 0000 [#1] SMP NOPTI RIP: 0010:dl_server_apply_params+0x239/0x3a0 Call Trace: sched_server_write_common.isra.0+0x21a/0x3c0 full_proxy_write+0x78/0xd0 vfs_write+0xe7/0x6e0 Both __dl_sub() and __dl_add() divide by cpus internally, which can be 0 once the CPU has been removed from any active root-domain span (this has been latent since the debugfs interface was introduced). 2) WARN_ON_ONCE in dl_server_start(): WARNING: kernel/sched/deadline.c:1805 at dl_server_start+0x232/0x270 Commit ee6e44dfe6e5 ("sched/deadline: Stop dl_server before CPU goes offline") added this check to catch enqueueing the server on an offline rq. There's no meaningful semantics for re-configuring the per-CPU dl_server bandwidth while the CPU is offline, so simply reject the write with -EBUSY so userspace gets a clear error. 2026-05-18sched/cache: Fix race condition during sched domain rebuildChen Yu
sched_cache_active_set_unlocked() checks hardware support without locks: static void sched_cache_active_set(bool locked) { /* hardware does not support */ if (!static_branch_likely(&sched_cache_present)) { _sched_cache_active_set(false, locked); return; } ... If build_sched_domains() runs concurrently during CPU hotplug, it can disable sched_cache_present under sched_domains_mutex and the CPU hotplug lock. If a debugfs write thread evaluates sched_cache_present as true right before that, and then blocks or gets preempted, it might proceed to enable sched_cache_active after the hardware support has been marked as absent. Make it safer by acquiring cpus_read_lock() and sched_domains_mutex_lock() when the user changes sched_cache_active via debugfs. This bug was reported by sashiko. 2026-05-18sched/cache: Add user control to adjust the aggressiveness of cache-aware ↵Chen Yu
scheduling Introduce a set of debugfs knobs to control how aggressively the cache aware scheduling does the task aggregation. (1) aggr_tolerance With sched_cache enabled, the scheduler uses a process's footprint as a proxy for its LLC footprint to determine if aggregating tasks on the preferred LLC could cause cache contention. If the footprint exceeds the LLC size, aggregation is skipped. Since the kernel cannot efficiently track per-task cache usage (resctrl is user-space only), userspace can provide a more accurate hint. Introduce /sys/kernel/debug/sched/llc_balancing/aggr_tolerance to let users control how strictly footprint limits aggregation. Values range from 0 to 100: - 0: Cache-aware scheduling is disabled. - 1: Strict; tasks with footprint larger than LLC size are skipped. - >=100: Aggressive; tasks are aggregated regardless of footprint. For example, with a 32MB L3 cache: - aggr_tolerance=1 -> tasks with footprint > 32MB are skipped. - aggr_tolerance=99 -> tasks with footprint > 784GB are skipped (784GB = (1 + (99 - 1) * 256) * 32MB). Similarly, /sys/kernel/debug/sched/llc_balancing/aggr_tolerance also controls how strictly the number of active threads is considered when doing cache aware load balance. The number of SMTs is also considered. High SMT counts reduce the aggregation capacity, preventing excessive task aggregation on SMT-heavy systems like Power10/Power11. Yangyu suggested introducing separate aggregation controls for the number of active threads and memory footprint checks. Since there are plans to add per-process/task group controls, fine-grained tunables are deferred to that implementation. (2) epoch_period, epoch_affinity_timeout, imb_pct, overaggr_pct are also turned into tunables. 2026-02-03sched/debug: Fix dl_server (re)start conditionsPeter Zijlstra
There are two problems with sched_server_write_common() that can cause the dl_server to malfunction upon attempting to change the parameters: 1) when, after having disabled the dl_server by setting runtime=0, it is enabled again while tasks are already enqueued. In this case is_active would still be 0 and dl_server_start() would not be called. 2) when dl_server_apply_params() would fail, runtime is not applied and does not reflect the new state. Instead have dl_server_start() check its actual dl_runtime, and have sched_server_write_common() unconditionally (re)start the dl_server. It will automatically stop if there isn't anything to do, so spurious activation is harmless -- while failing to start it is a problem. While there, move the printk out of the locked region and make it symmetric, also printing on enable. 2026-02-03sched/debug: Fix updating of ppos on server write opsJoel Fernandes
Updating "ppos" on error conditions does not make much sense. The pattern is to return the error code directly without modifying the position, or modify the position on success and return the number of bytes written. 2026-01-08sched: Further restrict the preemption modesPeter Zijlstra
The introduction of PREEMPT_LAZY was for multiple reasons: - PREEMPT_RT suffered from over-scheduling, hurting performance compared to !PREEMPT_RT. - the introduction of (more) features that rely on preemption; like folio_zero_user() which can do large memset() without preemption checks. (Xen already had a horrible hack to deal with long running hypercalls) - the endless and uncontrolled sprinkling of cond_resched() -- mostly cargo cult or in response to poor to replicate workloads. By moving to a model that is fundamentally preemptable these things become managable and avoid needing to introduce more horrible hacks. Since this is a requirement; limit PREEMPT_NONE to architectures that do not support preemption at all. Further limit PREEMPT_VOLUNTARY to those architectures that do not yet have PREEMPT_LAZY support (with the eventual goal to make this the empty set and completely remove voluntary preemption and cond_resched() -- notably VOLUNTARY is already limited to !ARCH_NO_PREEMPT.) This leaves up-to-date architectures (arm64, loongarch, powerpc, riscv, s390, x86) with only two preemption models: full and lazy. While Lazy has been the recommended setting for a while, not all distributions have managed to make the switch yet. Force things along. 2025-11-11sched/eevdf: Fix min_vruntime vs avg_vruntimePeter Zijlstra
Basically, from the constraint that the sum of lag is zero, you can infer that the 0-lag point is the weighted average of the individual vruntime, which is what we're trying to compute: \Sum w_i * v_i avg = -------------- \Sum w_i Now, since vruntime takes the whole u64 (worse, it wraps), this multiplication term in the numerator is not something we can compute; instead we do the min_vruntime (v0 henceforth) thing like: v_i = (v_i - v0) + v0 This does two things: - it keeps the key: (v_i - v0) 'small'; - it creates a relative 0-point in the modular space. If you do that subtitution and work it all out, you end up with: \Sum w_i * (v_i - v0) avg = --------------------- + v0 \Sum w_i Since you cannot very well track a ratio like that (and not suffer terrible numerical problems) we simpy track the numerator and denominator individually and only perform the division when strictly needed. Notably, the numerator lives in cfs_rq->avg_vruntime and the denominator lives in cfs_rq->avg_load. The one extra 'funny' is that these numbers track the entities in the tree, and current is typically outside of the tree, so avg_vruntime() adds current when needed before doing the division. (vruntime_eligible() elides the division by cross-wise multiplication) Anyway, as mentioned above, we currently use the CFS era min_vruntime for this purpose. However, this thing can only move forward, while the above avg can in fact move backward (when a non-eligible task leaves, the average becomes smaller), this can cause trouble when through happenstance (or construction) these values drift far enough apart to wreck the game. Replace cfs_rq::min_vruntime with cfs_rq::zero_vruntime which is kept near/at avg_vruntime, following its motion. The down-side is that this requires computing the avg more often. 2025-08-26sched/deadline: Always stop dl-server before changing parametersJuri Lelli
Commit cccb45d7c4295 ("sched/deadline: Less agressive dl_server handling") reduced dl-server overhead by delaying disabling servers only after there are no fair task around for a whole period, which means that deadline entities are not dequeued right away on a server stop event. However, the delay opens up a window in which a request for changing server parameters can break per-runqueue running_bw tracking, as reported by Yuri. Close the problematic window by unconditionally calling dl_server_stop() before applying the new parameters (ensuring deadline entities go through an actual dequeue). This reverts commit ad6b26b6a0a79166b53209df2ca1cf8636296382. This commit introduces per-memcg/task NUMA balance statistics, but unfortunately it introduced a NULL pointer exception due to the following race condition: After a swap task candidate was chosen, its mm_struct pointer was set to NULL due to task exit. Later, when performing the actual task swapping, the p->mm caused the problem. CPU0 CPU1 : ... task_numa_migrate task_numa_find_cpu task_numa_compare # a normal task p is chosen env->best_task = p # p exit: exit_signals(p); p->flags |= PF_EXITING exit_mm p->mm = NULL; migrate_swap_stop __migrate_swap_task((arg->src_task, arg->dst_cpu) count_memcg_event_mm(p->mm, NUMA_TASK_SWAP)# p->mm is NULL task_lock() should be held and the PF_EXITING flag needs to be checked to prevent this from happening. After discussion, the conclusion was that adding a lock is not worthwhile for some statistics calculations. Revert the change and rely on the tracepoint for this purpose. 2025-05-31sched/numa: add statistics of numa balance taskChen Yu
On systems with NUMA balancing enabled, it has been found that tracking task activities resulting from NUMA balancing is beneficial. NUMA balancing employs two mechanisms for task migration: one is to migrate a task to an idle CPU within its preferred node, and the other is to swap tasks located on different nodes when they are on each other's preferred nodes. The kernel already provides NUMA page migration statistics in /sys/fs/cgroup/mytest/memory.stat and /proc/{PID}/sched. However, it lacks statistics regarding task migration and swapping. Therefore, relevant counts for task migration and swapping should be added. The following two new fields: numa_task_migrated numa_task_swapped will be shown in /sys/fs/cgroup/{GROUP}/memory.stat, /proc/{PID}/sched and /proc/vmstat. Introducing both per-task and per-memory cgroup (memcg) NUMA balancing statistics facilitates a rapid evaluation of the performance and resource utilization of the target workload. For instance, users can first identify the container with high NUMA balancing activity and then further pinpoint a specific task within that group, and subsequently adjust the memory policy for that task. In short, although it is possible to iterate through /proc/$pid/sched to locate the problematic task, the introduction of aggregated NUMA balancing activity for tasks within each memcg can assist users in identifying the task more efficiently through a divide-and-conquer approach. As Libo Chen pointed out, the memcg event relies on the text names in vmstat_text, and /proc/vmstat generates corresponding items based on vmstat_text. Thus, the relevant task migration and swapping events introduced in vmstat_text also need to be populated by count_vm_numa_event(), otherwise these values are zero in /proc/vmstat. In theory, task migration and swap events are part of the scheduler's activities. The reason for exposing them through the memory.stat/vmstat interface is that we already have NUMA balancing statistics in memory.stat/vmstat, and these events are closely related to each other. Following Shakeel's suggestion, we describe the end-to-end flow/story of all these events occurring on a timeline for future reference: The goal of NUMA balancing is to co-locate a task and its memory pages on the same NUMA node. There are two strategies: migrate the pages to the task's node, or migrate the task to the node where its pages reside. Suppose a task p1 is running on Node 0, but its pages are located on Node 1. NUMA page fault statistics for p1 reveal its "page footprint" across nodes. If NUMA balancing detects that most of p1's pages are on Node 1: 1.Page Migration Attempt: The Numa balance first tries to migrate p1's pages to Node 0. The numa_page_migrate counter increments. 2.Task Migration Strategies: After the page migration finishes, Numa balance checks every 1 second to see if p1 can be migrated to Node 1. Case 2.1: Idle CPU Available If Node 1 has an idle CPU, p1 is directly scheduled there. This event is logged as numa_task_migrated. Case 2.2: No Idle CPU (Task Swap) If all CPUs on Node1 are busy, direct migration could cause CPU contention or load imbalance. Instead: The Numa balance selects a candidate task p2 on Node 1 that prefers Node 0 (e.g., due to its own page footprint). p1 and p2 are swapped. This cross-node swap is recorded as numa_task_swapped. 2025-03-17sched: Add a generic function to return the preemption stringSebastian Andrzej Siewior
The individual architectures often add the preemption model to the begin of the backtrace. This is the case on X86 or ARM64 for the "die" case but not for regular warning. With the addition of DYNAMIC_PREEMPT for PREEMPT_RT we end up with CONFIG_PREEMPT and CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT set simultaneously. That means that everyone who tried to add that piece of information gets it wrong for PREEMPT_RT because PREEMPT is checked first. Provide a generic function which returns the current scheduling model considering LAZY preempt and the current state of PREEMPT_DYNAMIC. The resulting strings are: ┏━━━━━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┳━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┓ ┃ Model ┃ -RT -DYN ┃ +RT -DYN ┃ -RT +DYN ┃ +RT +DYN ┃ ┡━━━━━━━━━━━╇━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╇━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╇━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╇━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━┩ │NONE │ NONE │ n/a │ PREEMPT(none) │ n/a │ ├───────────┼──────────────┼───────────────────┼────────────────────┼───────────────────┤ │VOLUNTARY │ VOLUNTARY │ n/a │ PREEMPT(voluntary) │ n/a │ ├───────────┼──────────────┼───────────────────┼────────────────────┼───────────────────┤ │FULL │ PREEMPT │ PREEMPT_RT │ PREEMPT(full) │ PREEMPT_{RT,full} │ ├───────────┼──────────────┼───────────────────┼────────────────────┼───────────────────┤ │LAZY │ PREEMPT_LAZY │ PREEMPT_{RT,LAZY} │ PREEMPT(lazy) │ PREEMPT_{RT,lazy} │ └───────────┴──────────────┴───────────────────┴────────────────────┴───────────────────┘ [ The dynamic building of the string can lead to an empty string if the function is invoked simultaneously on two CPUs. ] Co-developed-by: "Peter Zijlstra (Intel)" <peterz@infradead.org> Signed-off-by: "Peter Zijlstra (Intel)" <peterz@infradead.org> Co-developed-by: "Steven Rostedt (Google)" <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: "Steven Rostedt (Google)" <rostedt@goodmis.org> Signed-off-by: Sebastian Andrzej Siewior <bigeasy@linutronix.de> Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Reviewed-by: Shrikanth Hegde <sshegde@linux.ibm.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20250314160810.2373416-2-bigeasy@linutronix.de

need_resched warnings, if enabled, are treated as WARNINGs. If kernel.panic_on_warn is enabled, then this causes a kernel panic. Change fair to use resched_curr_lazy(), which, when the lazy preemption model is selected, will set TIF_NEED_RESCHED_LAZY. This LAZY bit will be promoted to the full NEED_RESCHED bit on tick. As such, the average delay between setting LAZY and actually rescheduling will be TICK_NSEC/2. In short, Lazy preemption will delay preemption for fair class but will function as Full preemption for all the other classes, most notably the realtime (RR/FIFO/DEADLINE) classes. The goal is to bridge the performance gap with Voluntary, such that we might eventually remove that option entirely. 2024-08-17sched/eevdf: Use sched_attr::sched_runtime to set request/slice suggestionPeter Zijlstra
Allow applications to directly set a suggested request/slice length using sched_attr::sched_runtime. The implementation clamps the value to: 0.1[ms] <= slice <= 100[ms] which is 1/10 the size of HZ=1000 and 10 times the size of HZ=100. Applications should strive to use their periodic runtime at a high confidence interval (95%+) as the target slice. Using a smaller slice will introduce undue preemptions, while using a larger value will increase latency. For all the following examples assume a scheduling quantum of 8, and for consistency all examples have W=4: {A,B,C,D}(w=1,r=8): ABCD... +---+---+---+--- t=0, V=1.5 t=1, V=3.5 A |------< A |------< B |------< B |------< C |------< C |------< D |------< D |------< ---+*------+-------+--- ---+--*----+-------+--- t=2, V=5.5 t=3, V=7.5 A |------< A |------< B |------< B |------< C |------< C |------< D |------< D |------< ---+----*--+-------+--- ---+------*+-------+--- Note: 4 identical tasks in FIFO order ~~~ {A,B}(w=1,r=16) C(w=2,r=16) AACCBBCC... +---+---+---+--- t=0, V=1.25 t=2, V=5.25 A |--------------< A |--------------< B |--------------< B |--------------< C |------< C |------< ---+*------+-------+--- ---+----*--+-------+--- t=4, V=8.25 t=6, V=12.25 A |--------------< A |--------------< B |--------------< B |--------------< C |------< C |------< ---+-------*-------+--- ---+-------+---*---+--- Note: 1 heavy task -- because q=8, double r such that the deadline of the w=2 task doesn't go below q. Note: observe the full schedule becomes: W*max(r_i/w_i) = 4*2q = 8q in length. Note: the period of the heavy task is half the full period at: W*(r_i/w_i) = 4*(2q/2) = 4q ~~~ {A,C,D}(w=1,r=16) B(w=1,r=8): BAACCBDD... +---+---+---+--- t=0, V=1.5 t=1, V=3.5 A |--------------< A |---------------< B |------< B |------< C |--------------< C |--------------< D |--------------< D |--------------< ---+*------+-------+--- ---+--*----+-------+--- t=3, V=7.5 t=5, V=11.5 A |---------------< A |---------------< B |------< B |------< C |--------------< C |--------------< D |--------------< D |--------------< ---+------*+-------+--- ---+-------+--*----+--- t=6, V=13.5 A |---------------< B |------< C |--------------< D |--------------< ---+-------+----*--+--- Note: 1 short task -- again double r so that the deadline of the short task won't be below q. Made B short because its not the leftmost task, but is eligible with the 0,1,2,3 spread. Note: like with the heavy task, the period of the short task observes: W*(r_i/w_i) = 4*(1q/1) = 4q ~~~ A(w=1,r=16) B(w=1,r=8) C(w=2,r=16) BCCAABCC... +---+---+---+--- t=0, V=1.25 t=1, V=3.25 A |--------------< A |--------------< B |------< B |------< C |------< C |------< ---+*------+-------+--- ---+--*----+-------+--- t=3, V=7.25 t=5, V=11.25 A |--------------< A |--------------< B |------< B |------< C |------< C |------< ---+------*+-------+--- ---+-------+--*----+--- t=6, V=13.25 A |--------------< B |------< C |------< ---+-------+----*--+--- Note: 1 heavy and 1 short task -- combine them all. Note: both the short and heavy task end up with a period of 4q ~~~ A(w=1,r=16) B(w=2,r=16) C(w=1,r=8) BBCAABBC... +---+---+---+--- t=0, V=1 t=2, V=5 A |--------------< A |--------------< B |------< B |------< C |------< C |------< ---+*------+-------+--- ---+----*--+-------+--- t=3, V=7 t=5, V=11 A |--------------< A |--------------< B |------< B |------< C |------< C |------< ---+------*+-------+--- ---+-------+--*----+--- t=7, V=15 A |--------------< B |------< C |------< ---+-------+------*+--- Note: as before but permuted ~~~ From all this it can be deduced that, for the steady state: - the total period (P) of a schedule is: W*max(r_i/w_i) - the average period of a task is: W*(r_i/w_i) - each task obtains the fair share: w_i/W of each full period P Signed-off-by: Peter Zijlstra (Intel) <peterz@infradead.org> Tested-by: Valentin Schneider <vschneid@redhat.com> Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20240727105030.842834421@infradead.org
2024-08-07sched/debug: Fix fair_server_period_max valueDan Carpenter
This code has an integer overflow or sign extension bug which was caught by gcc-13: kernel/sched/debug.c:341:57: error: integer overflow in expression of type 'long int' results in '-100663296' [-Werror=overflow] 341 | static unsigned long fair_server_period_max = (1 << 22) * NSEC_PER_USEC; /* ~4 seconds */ The result is that "fair_server_period_max" is set to 0xfffffffffa000000 (585 years) instead of instead of 0xfa000000 (4 seconds) that was intended. Fix this by changing the type to shift from (1 << 22) to (1UL << 22). 2024-08-04Merge branch 'sched/core' of ↵Tejun Heo
git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip into for-6.12 Pull tip/sched/core to resolve the following four conflicts. While 2-4 are simple context conflicts, 1 is a bit subtle and easy to resolve incorrectly. 1. 2c8d046d5d51 ("sched: Add normal_policy()") vs. faa42d29419d ("sched/fair: Make SCHED_IDLE entity be preempted in strict hierarchy") The former converts direct test on p->policy to use the helper normal_policy(). The latter moves the p->policy test to a different location. Resolve by converting the test on p->plicy in the new location to use normal_policy(). 2. a7a9fc549293 ("sched_ext: Add boilerplate for extensible scheduler class") vs. a110a81c52a9 ("sched/deadline: Deferrable dl server") Both add calls to put_prev_task_idle() and set_next_task_idle(). Simple context conflict. Resolve by taking changes from both. 3. a7a9fc549293 ("sched_ext: Add boilerplate for extensible scheduler class") vs. c245910049d0 ("sched/core: Add clearing of ->dl_server in put_prev_task_balance()") The former changes for_each_class() itertion to use for_each_active_class(). The latter moves away the adjacent dl_server handling code. Simple context conflict. Resolve by taking changes from both. 4. 60c27fb59f6c ("sched_ext: Implement sched_ext_ops.cpu_online/offline()") vs. 31b164e2e4af ("sched/smt: Introduce sched_smt_present_inc/dec() helper") 2f027354122f ("sched/core: Introduce sched_set_rq_on/offline() helper") The former adds scx_rq_deactivate() call. The latter two change code around it. Simple context conflict. Resolve by taking changes from both. Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>

Now that fair_server exists, we no longer need RT bandwidth control unless RT_GROUP_SCHED. Enable fair_server with parameters equivalent to RT throttling. 2024-07-29sched/fair: Fair server interfaceDaniel Bristot de Oliveira
Add an interface for fair server setup on debugfs. Each CPU has two files under /debug/sched/fair_server/cpu{ID}: - runtime: set runtime in ns - period: set period in ns This then leaves /proc/sys/kernel/sched_rt_{period,runtime}_us to set bounds on admission control. The interface also add the server to the dl bandwidth accounting.
