<title>mm: add CONFIG_PAGE_BLOCK_ORDER to select page block order</title>

Problem: On large page size configurations (16KiB, 64KiB), the CMA
alignment requirement (CMA_MIN_ALIGNMENT_BYTES) increases considerably,
and this causes the CMA reservations to be larger than necessary.  This
means that system will have less available MIGRATE_UNMOVABLE and
MIGRATE_RECLAIMABLE page blocks since MIGRATE_CMA can't fallback to them.

The CMA_MIN_ALIGNMENT_BYTES increases because it depends on MAX_PAGE_ORDER
which depends on ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER.  The value of ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER
increases on 16k and 64k kernels.

For example, in ARM, the CMA alignment requirement when:

- CONFIG_ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER default value is used
- CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE is set:

There are some extreme cases for the CMA alignment requirement when:

- CONFIG_ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER maximum value is set
- CONFIG_TRANSPARENT_HUGEPAGE is NOT set:
- CONFIG_HUGETLB_PAGE is NOT set

This affects the CMA reservations for the drivers. If a driver in a
4KiB kernel needs 4MiB of CMA memory, in a 16KiB kernel, the minimal
reservation has to be 32MiB due to the alignment requirements:

Solution: Add a new config CONFIG_PAGE_BLOCK_ORDER that allows to set the
page block order in all the architectures.  The maximum page block order
will be given by ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER.

By default, CONFIG_PAGE_BLOCK_ORDER will have the same value that
ARCH_FORCE_MAX_ORDER.  This will make sure that current kernel
configurations won't be affected by this change.  It is a opt-in change.

This patch will allow to have the same CMA alignment requirements for
large page sizes (16KiB, 64KiB) as that in 4kb kernels by setting a lower
pageblock_order.

Tests:

- Verified that HugeTLB pages work when pageblock_order is 1, 7, 10 on
  4k and 16k kernels.

- Verified that Transparent Huge Pages work when pageblock_order is 1,
  7, 10 on 4k and 16k kernels.

- Verified that dma-buf heaps allocations work when pageblock_order is
  1, 7, 10 on 4k and 16k kernels.

Benchmarks:

The benchmarks compare 16kb kernels with pageblock_order 10 and 7.  The
reason for the pageblock_order 7 is because this value makes the min CMA
alignment requirement the same as that in 4kb kernels (2MB).

- Perform 100K dma-buf heaps (/dev/dma_heap/system) allocations of
  SZ_8M, SZ_4M, SZ_2M, SZ_1M, SZ_64, SZ_8, SZ_4.  Use simpleperf
  (https://developer.android.com/ndk/guides/simpleperf) to measure the #
  of instructions and page-faults on 16k kernels.  The benchmark was
  executed 10 times.  The averages are below:

These results didn't show any significant regression when the
pageblock_order is set to 7 on 16kb kernels.

- Run speedometer 3.1 (https://browserbench.org/Speedometer3.1/) 5 times
  on the 16k kernels with pageblock_order 7 and 10.

<title>minmax: avoid overly complicated constant expressions in VM code</title>

The minmax infrastructure is overkill for simple constants, and can
cause huge expansions because those simple constants are then used by
other things.

For example, 'pageblock_order' is a core VM constant, but because it was
implemented using 'min_t()' and all the type-checking that involves, it
actually expanded to something like 2.5kB of preprocessor noise.

And when that simple constant was then used inside other expansions:

  #define pageblock_nr_pages      (1UL &lt;&lt; pageblock_order)
  #define pageblock_start_pfn(pfn)  ALIGN_DOWN((pfn), pageblock_nr_pages)

and we then use that inside a 'max()' macro:

	case ISOLATE_SUCCESS:
		update_cached = false;
		last_migrated_pfn = max(cc-&gt;zone-&gt;zone_start_pfn,
			pageblock_start_pfn(cc-&gt;migrate_pfn - 1));

the end result was that one statement expanding to 253kB in size.

There are probably other cases of this, but this one case certainly
stood out.

I've added 'MIN_T()' and 'MAX_T()' macros for this kind of "core simple
constant with specific type" use.  These macros skip the type checking,
and as such need to be very sparingly used only for obvious cases that
have active issues like this.

As Vlastimil suggested in previous discussion[1], it doesn't make sense to
set pageblock_order as MAX_PAGE_ORDER when hugetlbfs is not enabled and
THP is enabled.  Instead, it should be set to HPAGE_PMD_ORDER.

MAX_ORDER currently defined as number of orders page allocator supports:
user can ask buddy allocator for page order between 0 and MAX_ORDER-1.

This definition is counter-intuitive and lead to number of bugs all over
the kernel.

Change the definition of MAX_ORDER to be inclusive: the range of orders
user can ask from buddy allocator is 0..MAX_ORDER now.

MAX_ORDER currently defined as number of orders page allocator supports:
user can ask buddy allocator for page order between 0 and MAX_ORDER-1.

This definition is counter-intuitive and lead to number of bugs all over
the kernel.

Change the definition of MAX_ORDER to be inclusive: the range of orders
user can ask from buddy allocator is 0..MAX_ORDER now.

Move pageblock_start_pfn/pageblock_end_pfn() into pageblock-flags.h, then
they could be used somewhere else, not only in compaction, also use
ALIGN_DOWN() instead of round_down() to be pair with ALIGN(), which should
be same for pageblock usage.

Some places in the kernel don't really expect pageblock_order &gt;=
MAX_ORDER, and it looks like this is only possible in corner cases:

1) CONFIG_DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT we'll end up freeing pageblock_order
   pages via __free_pages_core(), which cannot possibly work.

2) find_zone_movable_pfns_for_nodes() will roundup the ZONE_MOVABLE
   start PFN to MAX_ORDER_NR_PAGES. Consequently with a bigger
   pageblock_order, we could have a single pageblock partially managed by
   two zones.

3) compaction code runs into __fragmentation_index() with order
   &gt;= MAX_ORDER, when checking WARN_ON_ONCE(order &gt;= MAX_ORDER). [1]

4) mm/page_reporting.c won't be reporting any pages with default
   page_reporting_order == pageblock_order, as we'll be skipping the
   reporting loop inside page_reporting_process_zone().

5) __rmqueue_fallback() will never be able to steal with
   ALLOC_NOFRAGMENT.

pageblock_order &gt;= MAX_ORDER is weird either way: it's a pure
optimization for making alloc_contig_range(), as used for allcoation of
gigantic pages, a little more reliable to succeed.  However, if there is
demand for somewhat reliable allocation of gigantic pages, affected
setups should be using CMA or boottime allocations instead.

So let's make sure that pageblock_order &lt; MAX_ORDER and simplify.
