commit 50fd6dd755c6e48a38af2fa4621167eea56829c2 upstream. user_event_mm_dup() walks the parent mm's enabler list locklessly under rcu_read_lock() during fork() (from copy_process()); it does not take event_mutex: rcu_read_lock(); list_for_each_entry_rcu(enabler, &old_mm->enablers, mm_enablers_link) enabler->event = user_event_get(orig->event); user_event_enabler_destroy() removes an enabler from that list with list_del_rcu() and then, without waiting for a grace period, drops the enabler's user_event reference with user_event_put() and frees the enabler with kfree(). A reader that loaded the enabler before the list_del_rcu() can still be walking it, which leads to two use-after-frees: - kfree(enabler) frees the enabler while that reader dereferences enabler->event. - user_event_put() may drop the last reference to the user_event, which is then freed (via delayed_destroy_user_event() on a work queue), while the same reader does user_event_get(orig->event) on it. Both are reachable by an unprivileged task that can open user_events_data: one multithreaded process that registers an enabler and then concurrently unregisters it and calls fork() triggers the race. KASAN reports a slab-use-after-free in user_event_mm_dup() during clone(), with a "refcount_t: addition on 0" warning when the user_event is freed. The enabler use-after-free was found first; the user_event one was reported by XIAO WU, and the earlier enabler-only fix did not address it. Defer both the user_event_put() and the kfree(enabler) to a work item queued with queue_rcu_work(), so they run only after an RCU grace period, once all readers walking the enabler list have finished. The put must run in process context because user_event_put() takes event_mutex on the last reference, so a work queue is used rather than call_rcu(). The now-unlocked put lets the locked argument of user_event_enabler_destroy() be removed; all callers are updated. 10 daysring-buffer: Fix event length with forced 8-byte alignmentHui Wang
[ Upstream commit c37e0a4b79a6bbb96ce5ffe279d7c001e20529e0 ] When RB_FORCE_8BYTE_ALIGNMENT is true, rb_calculate_event_length() reserves the space of event->array[0] for placing the data length and rb_update_event() stores the data length in event->array[0] accordingly. As a result the whole event length will add extra 4 bytes for sizeof(event.array[0]) unconditionally. But ring_buffer_event_length() only subtracts the sizeof(event->array[0]) for events larger than RB_MAX_SMALL_DATA + sizeof(event->array[0]). As a result, small events on architectures with RB_FORCE_8BYTE_ALIGNMENT=true report a data length that is 4 bytes larger than expected. To fix it, add the RB_FORCE_8BYTE_ALIGNMENT as a condition to subtract the size of that length field whenever RB_FORCE_8BYTE_ALIGNMENT is true. This issue is observed in a riscv64 kernel with CONFIG_HAVE_64BIT_ALIGNED_ACCESS set to y, when we run ftrace selftest trace_marker_raw.tc, we get the weird log: for cases where the id is 1..100, the number of data field is 8*N, but once id exceeds 100, the number of data field becomes 8*N+4: # 1 buf: 58 00 00 00 80 5e d1 63 (number of data field is 8*1) ... # a buf: 58 ... [ Upstream commit 69efd863a78584b9416ed6be0e1e7349124b4a00 ] Add syntax to the parsing of eprobes to be able to typecast a trace event field that is a pointer to a structure. Currently, a dereference must be a number, where the user has to figure out manually the offset of a member of a structure that they want to dereference. But for event probes that records a field that happens to be a pointer to a structure, it cannot dereference these values with BTF naming, but must use numerical offsets. [ Upstream commit f07883450eb14d1cf020b55d9f3a7ec5683bcd26 ] The synthetic field helpers build a prefixed synthetic variable name and a generated hist command in fixed MAX_FILTER_STR_VAL buffers. The current code appends those strings with raw strcat(), so long key lists, field names, or saved filters can run past the end of the staging buffers. Build both strings with seq_buf and propagate -E2BIG if either the synthetic variable name or the generated command exceeds MAX_FILTER_STR_VAL. This keeps the existing tracing-side limit while using the helper intended for bounded command construction. 2026-07-18tracing: Prevent out-of-bounds read in glob matchingHuihui Huang

String event fields are not necessarily NUL-terminated, so the filter predicate functions (filter_pred_string(), filter_pred_strloc() and filter_pred_strrelloc()) pass the field length to the regex match callbacks, and the length-aware matchers honour it. regex_match_glob() was the exception: it ignored the length and called glob_match(), which scans the string until it hits a NUL byte. Some string fields are not NUL-terminated. One example is the dynamic char array of the xfs_* namespace tracepoints, which is copied without a trailing NUL. For such a field, glob matching reads past the end of the event field, causing a KASAN slab-out-of-bounds read in glob_match(), reached via regex_match_glob() and filter_match_preds() from the xfs_lookup tracepoint. Add a length-bounded glob_match_len() and use it from regex_match_glob() so glob matching always stops at the field boundary. The matching loop is factored into a shared helper so glob_match() keeps its behaviour. commit c3e94604675e3db186111b8942650d86577df9b0 upstream. func_set_flag() dereferences tr->current_trace_flags before verifying that the current tracer is actually the function tracer. When the active tracer has been switched away from "function" (e.g., to "wakeup_rt"), tr->current_trace_flags can be NULL, leading to a NULL pointer dereference and kernel crash. The call chain that triggers this is: trace_options_write() -> __set_tracer_option() -> trace->set_flag() /* func_set_flag */ In func_set_flag(), the first operation is: if (!!set == !!(tr->current_trace_flags->val & bit)) This dereferences tr->current_trace_flags unconditionally. The safety check that guards against a non-function tracer: if (tr->current_trace != &function_trace) return 0; is placed *after* the dereference, which is too late. When the process subsequently writes to the option file, func_set_flag() is invoked and crashes on the NULL dereference. Fix this by moving the current_trace check before the current_trace_flags dereference, so that func_set_flag() returns early when the function tracer is not active. Hybrid automata monitors may start timers, depending on the model, these may remain active on an exiting task and cause false positives or even access freed memory. Add an enable/disable hook in the HA code, currently only populated by the per-task handler for registration and deregistration. This hooks to the sched_process_exit event and ensures the timer is stopped for every exiting task. The handler is enabled automatically but may be disabled, for instance if the monitor uses the event for another purpose (but should still manually ensure timers are stopped). On real hardware, panic and machine reboot may not flush hardware cache to memory. This means the persistent ring buffer, which relies on a coherent state of memory, may not have its events written to the buffer and they may be lost. Moreover, there may be inconsistency with the counters which are used for validation of the integrity of the persistent ring buffer which may cause all data to be discarded. To avoid this issue, stop recording of the ring buffer on panic and flush the cache of the ring buffer's memory. 2026-05-21ring-buffer: Fix reporting of missed events in iteratorSteven Rostedt
When tracing is active while reading the trace file, if the iterator reading the buffer detects that the writer has passed the iterator head, it will reset and set a "missed events" flag. This flag is passed to the output processing to show the user that events were missed: CPU:4 [LOST EVENTS] The problem is that the flag is reset after it is checked in ring_buffer_iter_dropped(). But the "trace" file iterates over all the CPU ring buffers and it will check if they are dropped when figuring out which buffer to print next. This prematurely clears the missed_events flag if the CPU buffer with the missed events is not the one that is printed next. On the iteration where the CPU buffer with the missed events is printed, the check if it had missed events would return false and the output does not show that events were missed. Do not reset the missed_events flag when checking if there were missed events, but instead clear it when moving the iterator head to the next event. hist_field_name() returns "" everywhere except the fully-qualified VAR_REF/EXPR case, where snprintf() truncation returns NULL early and bypasses the bottom NULL->"" guard. Callers don't expect NULL: strcat(expr, hist_field_name(field, 0)) at trace_events_hist.c:1758 and the strcmp() in the sort-key match loop at :4804 both deref it. system and event_name are bounded by MAX_EVENT_NAME_LEN, but the field name on a VAR_REF is kstrdup'd from a histogram variable name parsed out of the trigger string and has no length cap, so a long enough var name in a fully qualified reference can reach the truncation path. Keep the length check but leave field_name as "" on overflow. Commit 4346ba1604093 ("fprobe: Rewrite fprobe on function-graph tracer") changed fprobe to register struct fprobe to an rcu-hlist, but it forgot to wait for RCU GP. Thus there can be use-after-free if the fprobe is released right after unregistering. This can be happened on fprobe event and sample module code. To fix this issue, add synchronize_rcu() in unregister_fprobe(). Note that BPF is OK because fprobe is used as a part of bpf_kprobe_multi_link. This unregisters its fprobe in bpf_kprobe_multi_link_release() and it is deallocated via bpf_kprobe_multi_link_dealloc(), which is invoked from bpf_link_defer_dealloc_rcu_gp() RCU callback. For BPF, this also introduced unregister_fprobe_async() which does NOT wait for RCU grace priod. There currently isn't a max limit an event probe can be. One could make an event greater than PAGE_SIZE, which makes the event useless because if it's bigger than the max event that can be recorded into the ring buffer, then it will never be recorded. A event probe should never need to be greater than 3K, so make that the max size. As long as the max is less than the max that can be recorded onto the ring buffer, it should be fine. init_annotated_branch_stats() and all_annotated_branch_stats() check the return value of register_stat_tracer() with "if (!ret)", but register_stat_tracer() returns 0 on success and a negative errno on failure. The inverted check causes the warning to be printed on every successful registration, e.g.: Warning: could not register annotated branches stats while leaving real failures silent. The initcall also returned a hard-coded 1 instead of the actual error. Invert the check and propagate ret so that the warning fires on real errors and the initcall reports the correct status. Fix fprobe to unregister ftrace_ops if corresponding type of fprobe does not exist on the fprobe_ip_table and it is expected to be empty when unloading modules. Commit 2c67dc457bc6 ("tracing: fprobe: optimization for entry only case") introduced a different ftrace_ops for entry-only fprobes. However, when unregistering an fprobe, the kernel only checks if another fprobe exists at the same address, without checking which type of fprobe it is. If different fprobes are registered at the same address, the same address will be registered in both fgraph_ops and ftrace_ops, but only one of them will be deleted when unregistering. (the one removed first will not be deleted from the ops). This results in junk entries remaining in either fgraph_ops or ftrace_ops. When register_fprobe_ips() fails, it tries to remove a list of fprobe_hash_node from fprobe_ip_table, but it missed to remove fprobe itself from fprobe_table. Moreover, when removing the fprobe_hash_node which is added to rhltable once, it must use kfree_rcu() after removing from rhltable. To fix these issues, this reuses unregister_fprobe() internal code to rollback the half-way registered fprobe. unregister_fprobe() can fail under memory pressure because of memory allocation failure, but this maybe called from module unloading, and usually there is no way to retry it. Anyway, if the last fprobe is removed, the filter will be freed.
