The above issue may happen as follows:
(1) Add kprobe tracepoint;
(2) insmod test.ko;
(3)  Module triggers ftrace disabled;
(4) rmmod test.ko;
(5) cat /proc/kallsyms; --&gt; Will trigger UAF as test.ko already removed;
ftrace_mod_get_kallsym()
...
strscpy(module_name, mod_map-&gt;mod-&gt;name, MODULE_NAME_LEN);
...

The problem is when a module triggers an issue with ftrace and
sets ftrace_disable. The ftrace_disable is set when an anomaly is
discovered and to prevent any more damage, ftrace stops all text
modification. The issue that happened was that the ftrace_disable stops
more than just the text modification.

When a module is loaded, its init functions can also be traced. Because
kallsyms deletes the init functions after a module has loaded, ftrace
saves them when the module is loaded and function tracing is enabled. This
allows the output of the function trace to show the init function names
instead of just their raw memory addresses.

When a module is removed, ftrace_release_mod() is called, and if
ftrace_disable is set, it just returns without doing anything more. The
problem here is that it leaves the mod_list still around and if kallsyms
is called, it will call into this code and access the module memory that
has already been freed as it will return:

  strscpy(module_name, mod_map-&gt;mod-&gt;name, MODULE_NAME_LEN);

Where the "mod" no longer exists and triggers a UAF bug.

When the kernel contains a large number of functions that can be traced,
the loop in ftrace_graph_set_hash() may take a lot of time to execute.
This may trigger the softlockup watchdog.

Add cond_resched() within the loop to allow the kernel to remain
responsive even when processing a large number of functions.

This matches the cond_resched() that is used in other locations of the
code that iterates over all functions that can be traced.

Check whether denominator expression x * (x - 1) * 1000 mod {2^32, 2^64}
produce zero and skip stddev computation in that case.

For now don't care about rec-&gt;counter * rec-&gt;counter overflow because
rec-&gt;time * rec-&gt;time overflow will likely happen earlier.

Since the backport commit eea46baf1451 ("ftrace: Fix possible
use-after-free issue in ftrace_location()") on linux-5.4.y branch, the
old ftrace_int3_handler()-&gt;ftrace_location() path has included
rcu_read_lock(), which has mcount location inside and leads to potential
double fault.

Replace rcu_read_lock/unlock with preempt_enable/disable notrace macros
so that the mcount location does not appear on the int3 handler path.

This fix is specific to linux-5.4.y branch, the only branch still using
ftrace_int3_handler with commit e60b613df8b6 ("ftrace: Fix possible
use-after-free issue in ftrace_location()") backported. It also avoids
the need to backport the code conversion to text_poke() on this branch.

    # echo "write*:mod:ext3" &gt; /sys/kernel/tracing/stack_trace_filter

The current mod command causes a null pointer dereference. While commit
0f17976568b3f ("ftrace: Fix regression with module command in stack_trace_filter")
has addressed part of the issue, it left a corner case unhandled, which still
results in a kernel crash.

The root cause is that, in lookup_rec(), ftrace record of some address
is being searched in ftrace pages of some module, but those ftrace pages
at the same time is being freed in ftrace_release_mod() as the
corresponding module is being deleted:

     ftrace_process_locs()/ftrace_release_mod()/ftrace_free_mem().

The root cause is that, in lookup_rec(), ftrace record of some address
is being searched in ftrace pages of some module, but those ftrace pages
at the same time is being freed in ftrace_release_mod() as the
corresponding module is being deleted:

  1. Hold rcu lock as accessing ftrace pages in ftrace_location_range();

     ftrace_process_locs()/ftrace_release_mod()/ftrace_free_mem().

As comments in ftrace_process_locs(), there may be NULL pointers in
mcount_loc section:
 &gt; Some architecture linkers will pad between
 &gt; the different mcount_loc sections of different
 &gt; object files to satisfy alignments.
 &gt; Skip any NULL pointers.

After commit 20e5227e9f55 ("ftrace: allow NULL pointers in mcount_loc"),
NULL pointers will be accounted when allocating ftrace pages but skipped
before adding into ftrace pages, this may result in some pages not being
used. Then after commit 706c81f87f84 ("ftrace: Remove extra helper
functions"), warning may occur at:
  WARN_ON(pg-&gt;next);

To fix it, only warn for case that no pointers skipped but pages not used
up, then free those unused pages after releasing ftrace_lock.

Instead of saving the size of the records field of the ftrace_page, store
the order it uses to allocate the pages, as that is what is needed to know
in order to free the pages. This simplifies the code.

It is possible that on error pg-&gt;size can be zero when getting its order,
which would return a -1 value. It is dangerous to pass in an order of -1
to free_pages(). Check if order is greater than or equal to zero before
calling free_pages().

Looking for ways to shrink the size of the dyn_ftrace structure, knowing the
information about how many pages and the number of groups of those pages, is
useful in working out the best ways to save on memory.

This adds one info print on how many groups of pages were used to allocate
the ftrace dyn_ftrace structures, and also shows the number of pages and
groups in the dyn_ftrace_total_info (which is used for debugging).
