[ Upstream commit d3ec78f8f8d48a04a9fac38d47275c34645e5103 ]

A recursive locking deadlock can occur in the firmware loader's power
management notification handler.

During system suspend or hibernation preparation, fw_pm_notify() calls
device_cache_fw_images(). This function acquires fw_lock to set the
firmware cache state to FW_LOADER_START_CACHE and then iterates over all
devices using dpm_for_each_dev() while still holding the lock.

For each device, dev_cache_fw_image() schedules asynchronous work to cache
the firmware. If memory allocation for the async work entry fails (e.g., in
out-of-memory conditions), async_schedule_node_domain() falls back to
executing the work function synchronously in the current thread.

The synchronous execution path (__async_dev_cache_fw_image() -&gt;
cache_firmware() -&gt; request_firmware() -&gt; assign_fw()) attempts to acquire
fw_lock again. Since the current thread already holds fw_lock, this results
in a recursive locking deadlock.

Fix this by releasing fw_lock immediately after updating the cache state
and before calling dpm_for_each_dev(). The lock is only needed to protect
the state update. Concurrent firmware requests will correctly see the
FW_LOADER_START_CACHE state and use the piggyback mechanism, which is
independently protected by its own fwc-&gt;name_lock.

<title>firmware_loader: fix device reference leak in firmware_upload_register()</title>

commit 896df22ee57648b0c505bd76ddbc6b2341834696 upstream.

firmware_upload_register()
  -&gt; fw_create_instance()
     -&gt; device_initialize()

After fw_create_instance() succeeds, the lifetime of the embedded struct
device is expected to be managed through the device core reference
counting, since fw_create_instance() has already called
device_initialize().

In firmware_upload_register(), if alloc_lookup_fw_priv() fails after
fw_create_instance() succeeds, the code reaches free_fw_sysfs and frees
fw_sysfs directly instead of releasing the device reference with
put_device(). This may leave the reference count of the embedded struct
device unbalanced, resulting in a refcount leak.

The issue was identified by a static analysis tool I developed and
confirmed by manual review. Fix this by using put_device(fw_dev) in the
failure path and letting fw_dev_release() handle the final cleanup,
instead of freeing the instance directly from the error path.

The alg instance should be released under the exception path, otherwise
there may be resource leak here.

To mitigate this, free the alg instance with crypto_free_shash when kmalloc
fails.

commit f0e5311aa8022107d63c54e2f03684ec097d1394 upstream.

Most firmware names are hardcoded strings, or are constructed from fairly
constrained format strings where the dynamic parts are just some hex
numbers or such.

However, there are a couple codepaths in the kernel where firmware file
names contain string components that are passed through from a device or
semi-privileged userspace; the ones I could find (not counting interfaces
that require root privileges) are:

 - lpfc_sli4_request_firmware_update() seems to construct the firmware
   filename from "ModelName", a string that was previously parsed out of
   some descriptor ("Vital Product Data") in lpfc_fill_vpd()
 - nfp_net_fw_find() seems to construct a firmware filename from a model
   name coming from nfp_hwinfo_lookup(pf-&gt;hwinfo, "nffw.partno"), which I
   think parses some descriptor that was read from the device.
   (But this case likely isn't exploitable because the format string looks
   like "netronome/nic_%s", and there shouldn't be any *folders* starting
   with "netronome/nic_". The previous case was different because there,
   the "%s" is *at the start* of the format string.)
 - module_flash_fw_schedule() is reachable from the
   ETHTOOL_MSG_MODULE_FW_FLASH_ACT netlink command, which is marked as
   GENL_UNS_ADMIN_PERM (meaning CAP_NET_ADMIN inside a user namespace is
   enough to pass the privilege check), and takes a userspace-provided
   firmware name.
   (But I think to reach this case, you need to have CAP_NET_ADMIN over a
   network namespace that a special kind of ethernet device is mapped into,
   so I think this is not a viable attack path in practice.)

Fix it by rejecting any firmware names containing ".." path components.

For what it's worth, I went looking and haven't found any USB device
drivers that use the firmware loader dangerously.

The crypto dependencies for the firmwware loader are incomplete,
in particular a built-in FW_LOADER fails to link against a modular
crypto hash driver:

ld.lld: error: undefined symbol: crypto_alloc_shash
ld.lld: error: undefined symbol: crypto_shash_digest
ld.lld: error: undefined symbol: crypto_destroy_tfm
&gt;&gt;&gt; referenced by main.c
&gt;&gt;&gt;               drivers/base/firmware_loader/main.o:(fw_log_firmware_info) in archive vmlinux.a

Rework this to use the usual 'select' from the driver module,
to respect the built-in vs module dependencies, and add a
more verbose crypto dependency to the debug option to prevent
configurations that lead to a link failure.

Having helped an user recently figure out why the customized path being
specified was not taken into account landed on a subtle difference
between using:

echo "/xyz/firmware" &gt; /sys/module/firmware_class/parameters/path

which inserts an additional newline which is passed as is down to
fw_get_filesystem_firmware() and ultimately kernel_read_file_from_path()
and fails.

Strip off \n from the customized firmware path such that users do not
run into these hard to debug situations.

Enable dynamic-debug logging of firmware filenames and SHA256 checksums
to clearly identify the firmware files that are loaded by the system.

Example output:

<title>driver core: class: mark the struct class for sysfs callbacks as constant</title>

struct class should never be modified in a sysfs callback as there is
nothing in the structure to modify, and frankly, the structure is almost
never used in a sysfs callback, so mark it as constant to allow struct
class to be moved to read-only memory.

While we are touching all class sysfs callbacks also mark the attribute
as constant as it can not be modified. The bonding code still uses this
structure so it can not be removed from the function callbacks.

 - Make the -s option detection work for future GNU Make versions

 - Add -Werror to KBUILD_CPPFLAGS when CONFIG_WERROR=y

 - Allow W=1 builds to detect -Wundef warnings in any preprocessed files

 - Raise the minimum supported version of binutils to 2.25

 - Use $(intcmp ...) to compare integers if GNU Make &gt;= 4.4 is used

 - Use $(file ...) to read a file if GNU Make &gt;= 4.2 is used

 - Print error if GNU Make older than 3.82 is used

 - Allow modpost to detect section mismatches with Clang LTO
