This can happen if the compiler generates a tailcall to another function. For example, without asmlinkage_protect sys_openat is compiled into this function: sys_openat: clr.l %d0 move.w 18(%sp),%d0 move.l %d0,16(%sp) jbra do_sys_open Note how the fourth argument is modified in place, modifying the register %d4 that gets restored from this stack slot when the function returns to user-space. The caller may expect the register to be unmodified across system calls. It is possible to disable the clock selection at configuration time,
but for ColdFire targets we always expect a clock frequency to be
selected. This results in the following compile time error:

The inclusion of multiple FEC ethernet platform devices is based around the FEC address definitions in the platform headers. The ColdFire m527x platform is defining 2 FEC modules, but the 5271 SoC only has a single FEC hardware module. The attempt to probe and init a second FEC module causes a trap and dump on boot on this platform. Fix the definitions so that only the 5275 SoC platform (which has 2 FEC hardware modules) defines the second base address. Core mm expects __PAGETABLE_{PUD,PMD}_FOLDED to be defined if these page
table levels folded. Usually, these defines are provided by
<asm-generic/pgtable-nopmd.h> and <asm-generic/pgtable-nopud.h>.
But some architectures fold page table levels in a custom way. They
need to define these macros themself. This patch adds missing defines.
The patch fixes mm->nr_pmds underflow and eliminates dead __pmd_alloc()
and __pud_alloc() on architectures without these page table levels.
